Accompanied by two carte-de-visite Photographs of Booth. One is a distinguished three-quart-length pose in partial profile, facing left with his right hand holding his lapel and his left behind him; the second, by Fay of New York, is a vignetted waist-length image of the actor in a coat. Also with a New York Sun newspaper, 4/19/1865, with war news from North Carolina and heavy coverage of Lincoln's death. Also with a souvenir reprint of the playbill for the performance of "Our American Cousin" at which Booth committed the crime (condition problems). Finally, with a clipping about the death of Booth, probably clipped much later from an archive newspaper. Booth, John Wilkes - American actor and assassin (1838-65); scion of the great stage family, his father was one of the great stars of his era, and his brother Edwin is acknowledged the greatest American actor of the 19th century; a strong supporter of slavery, he was at the center of a plot to kidnap President Abraham Lincoln, but Lee's surrender at Appomattox on April 12, 1865, made the plan moot; two days later, on Good Friday, as part of an attempt to decapitate the US government, Booth shot Lincoln in the head at Ford's Theatre in Washington, leaping to the stage to shout "Sic semper tyrranus!" the Virginia state motto (Thus always to tyrants!); he escaped the city, and after a twelve-day manhunt, was shot and killed in a barn near Port Royal, Virginia. Just a week after killing the assassin, he writes a friend named Andrew, "I was truly Glad to hear from you and hope to see you soon when I shall be better able to explain All. I have heard of John's death. Also of the death of his Wife." Some fingerprints at upper left, otherwise fine. American Book Prices Current lists only one other ALS of Corbett's having sold in nearly three decades.With an amazing content ALS by the man who led the detachment that tracked down Booth and his accomplice David Herold in Virginia, "E.P. Doherty late Capt. 16th NY Cav.," five pages on five sheets, 4to, on imprinted stationery of NY GAR Veterans Post No. 436, February 1, 1895. He gives attorney W. Ward in Pleasantville, PA an account of his pursuit of Booth. Making his way to Fredericksburg, Virginia, "I got information from the Ferryman's wife that put me on the track of the assassins. I arrested her husband after he had ferried the men & myself across the Rappahannock and compelled him to guide me to Bowling Green, & to the House of Mrs. Goldman, where, his wife had told me the assassins had gone. I left all the men but 8 & surrounded Goldmans' House, after a little delay I arrested a (man) named Capt. Jett (actually a Confederate private) who had been in Booth's company the previous evening. I read Stanton's proclamation (offering a $100,000 reward for the assassins' capture and death to anyone who assists them), threatened him with instant death, if he did not reveal the hiding place of Booth. He told me where he had left Booth. I arrested him & compelled him to guide me to the Garrett farm, where Booth & Horold [sic] were in hiding." (imagea) (Image) Est. $7,500-10,000

Weichmann, a chief prosecution witness in the conspiracy trial of John Surratt, Mary Surratt, George Atzerodt, Lewis Payne, David Herold, Edmund Spangler, Michael O'Laughlen, Samuel Arnold, and Samuel Mudd. Weichmann's testimony helped hang Mrs. Surratt, Atzerodt, Payne, and Herold. One, from Luther B. Baker, who helped lead the chase for John Wilkes Booth, is in reply to Weichmann's solicitation for his book on Lincoln's assassination; he states simply that "I will not at present subscribe. I inclose my circular which speaks for itself...I attended the great trial and was a witness at the trial of John H. Surratt. Was also witness at the Impeachment trial of President Johnson." Baker's circular is for his own lectures on the assassination. The largest series of letters (21) is from Almarin C. Richards, who had been superintendent of the Washington Metropolitan Police, who leading first hours of the hunt after Booth and the other conspirators; the matter was soon taken out of his hands by Secretary of War Edmund Stanton. Richards defends Weichmann from the "dastardly and scandalous attack upon your character by John H. Surrat" in his interview in the Washington Post. Weichmann had been a friend of Suratt's and was able to place many of the conspirators together during the planning of the assassination. Many had accused him of turning in his companions for money. Richards gives news about the detectives who first interviewed Weichmann and gives his own recollection of the case: "The man from whom we got the first information connecting Payne, Harold and Atzerot with Booth was a saloon keeper under or near the theatre named Ferguson." Many of the letters are full of Richards's recollections of the investigation, and he believes firmly in the guilt of Mrs. Suratt, still a controversial question today.Another six letters are from Dr. George Loring Porter, post surgeon at Washington Arsenal, who was the only military officer present at the secret burial of John Wilkes Booth; he was also the physician in charge of the other conspirators. He gives his opinions of the them, including (in contrast to Richards) his belief that Mrs. Surratt's Catholicism was not a motivation in her involvement in the assassination! With two TLS by Wm. H. Seward, son of the eponymous Secretary of State, informing Weichmann of the dates of his mother's, sister's, and brother Augustus's deaths, and directing him to his brother Frederick Seward, survivor of Lewis Payne's vicious knife attack on the night Lincoln was killed. With a typed letter directing Weichmann to Richards's whereabouts (Florida) and an interesting typescript, January 31, 1897, by Edward G. Jones of Anderson, Indiana, who asserts that Booth was never killed and a double was buried in his place!
