924 c   Jenny Lind, the Swedish Nightingale, arrives in America on the U.S. Mail Packet Atlantic, folded letter with integral address leaf datelined Batavia (Dutch East Indies) 20th June 1850 endorsed Via Marseilles to Baring Brothers & Co., LoJenny Lind, the Swedish Nightingale, arrives in America on the U.S. Mail Packet "Atlantic", folded letter with integral address leaf datelined "Batavia (Dutch East Indies) 20th June 1850" endorsed "Via Marseilles" to Baring Brothers & Co., London, who forwarded it to Liverpool for placement on board the Atlantic, departing 21st August to New York and then to Boston, letter rated "1/-" from Batavia to London, at Liverpool the "1/-" was crossed out and it was re-rated "24" cents on arrival in New York, because it was carried by U.S. packet and "3 cents" for transmission to Boston, very fine.Also included is a ladies cover with colorless embossed "Jenny Lind" cameo with blue "Waterbury, Ct./Dec 5" datestamp and matching "5" rate, as well as an original "Greeting to America" song written for Jenny Lind by Bayard Taylor in his hand and signed and dated by him on April 13, 1850, plus an engraved portrait of Taylor. Before her arrival, Barnum had offered a $200 prize for an ode, "Greeting to America," to be sung by Jenny Lind at her first concert. The prize was awarded to Bayard Taylor and it was set to music by Julius Bennedict.It was on this voyage of the Atlantic that P.T. Barnum brought Jenny Lind to America, which was one of the great feats in the history of entertainment. She was brought to America in 1850 under contract that she would not be associated with his museum freaks. She was paid for 150 concerts at $1,000 each, plus all expenses for her maid, butler, secretary and an additional $25,000 for her musical director. Gilbert R. Spalding. They also built the Floating Palace, a deluxe riverboat, where circus performances were given. It was towed by a steamboat on the Ohio & Mississippi Rivers and was destroyed by fire at New Albany, Indiana in 1865. This was the first circus to use a 40-horse hitch to pull the bandwagon in circus parades. The spectacular 40-horse team was also used by Yankee Robinson in 1866, Dan Rice in 1873 and Barnum & Bailey in 1898, 1903 and 1904. The driver sat eighty feet behind the four-abreast lead horses and held ten reins in each hand - one for each two horses. (Image) Est. $750-1,000

In 1858 he went into a partnership with A.P. Older and it became Orton & Older's Great Southern Circus from 1858-60. Sometime after 1860, Older left the show, Hiram retired from management and died at the age of 72. After Hiram's death the show continued under the Orton family and Hiram's son Miles, who was an equestrian bareback rider of note. Miles died in Key West, Florida in 1903, but the show kept on going as Orton Brothers Circus, under R.Z. Orton, until they finally closed it out in the early 1930's. In 1804 the Russians, under Alexander Baranov, defeated the Indians and seized the village in retaliation for the massacre of the Russians at St. Michael in 1802. Baranov built a fort at the site, named it New Archangel, and made it the capitol of Russian America. However the common usage of the name "Sitka" has prevailed to this day.Russia sold Alaska to the U.S. in the spring of 1867 for the sum of $7,200,000. DeLong and most of the officers and crew, on June 13, 1881. James Gordon Bennett of the N.Y. Herald, financed most of the expedition, although it was Commanded by U.S. Naval personnel. It is one of the epic voyages of Arctic exploration. At the time this letter was written the fate of the expedition was not known.
