1241   Journal of the HC Ship Castle Huntley A delightful and rare manuscript log and journal of "The Proceedings on Board the H.C. Ship Castle Huntley, 9th Voyage, From the Port of London to Madras, Penang, and China, Commanded by Henry A. Drummond Esqr. Commencing the 19th Day of January 1830, Ending the 2nd of June 1831, Kept by James L. Templer, 5th Officer." Folio, 147 leaves, contemporary reversed calf, expertly rebacked. Bound in at the end is a log of the ship's previous voyage, "From London to Mauritius, Penang, and China, commanded by Thomas Dunkin Esqr...Feb. 1st 1828, ending June 16th 1829."Includes three full-page original drawings of the Huntley and eight other full-page drawings of ships and nautical views. Also with sixteen smaller drawings, many of a merman sailing in a snail shell, often with amusing captions in French or English. There are in addition four Watercolors including two depictions of the Straits of Sunda (between Java and Sumatra). There are also several poems, usually comic, with humorous signatures such as "Cholera Morbus," "Giringo Whino," and "Lobster." With detailed descriptions of major ports of call, including an account of the ship's visit to St. Helena on its return voyage, (with a drawing of Napoleon's tomb), short treatises on the currents and the monsoons, and lists of crews and passengers, including twelve women (wives of crew members). Some wear to cover, but interior is nearly pristine.This kind of ship would have carried men, mail, and supplies from the East Coast to Fort Astoria, the first American settlement on the West Coast, which had been established in 1811 by the Pacific Fur Company, founded by John Jacob Astor. The fort would be sold to the North West Company, a British firm, at the beginning of the War of 1812, and though it was given back to the United States in the Treaty of Ghent, it wouldn't be returned to American hands until the Oregon boundary was settled between the two countries in 1848. After stopping at Astoria, the ship continued, carrying native Hawaiians home and trading furs to the Far East. (imagea) (imageb) Est. $300-400

1245   [Crimean War], Highly unusual lot of autograph letters, some with covers, by English sailors involved in the war, 18 of them written by Willy Robert Kennedy, a young midshipman aboard the HMS Rodney, a ship of the line, 1852. After stopping in Lisbon and refitting at Cork, the ship makes its way to Malta in June 1853, whence he writes that "We are off to sea tomorrow...Some people say that we are going to war with the Russians but there are such lots of reports that you can't as believe anyone." At the time of this letter, Russia was preparing to occupy the Danube Principalities (now Romania and Moldova). From Bashika Bay on the west coast of Turkey, he pens (on a pictorial letter sheet of his ship), "Our only companions are the Frenchmen who are a very nice set of fellows. You are obliged to go ashore armed here, for the Greeks want to stick you...The other night there was a poor devil of a butcher killed here. He had a few dollars about him...The Greeks...18 of them went to his tent, stabbed him in 7 places, cut off his hand, and nearly cut his head off. I saw his body when I went watering." In early January 1854, they have arrived at Sinope, on the northern coast of Turkey (Black Sea), where the officers went ashore to look at the wrecks of a great naval battle between the Turks and Russians: "The...wrecks were burnt to the water's edge & then blown up so there was not much to been seen in them except the dead bodies which were clinging to the works, but they stunk." That autumn they are off to Sevastopol "with 32 liners, 6 frigates & upwards of 80 steamers besides about 50 sailing transports. Such a fleet was never seen before...All the troops are embarked 35 thousand French on board their own ships, 25,000 English...& 20,000 Turks." Willy next gives his account of the Battle of Alma, on the Crimea: "The Russians...had 100 guns & 50,000 men with them all well prepared...Our men had only landed about 2 days, and had very little artillery & cavalry with them. Besides, the Russians were on the top of a tremendously steep hill...The Russians … commenced at 12 oclock and after 3 hours of very hard fighting, the English were in possession of the heights and the Russians retreated...It is a horrible sight seeing hundreds of them coming down in waggons with bullet holes through their knees, arms, shoulders. For those who are hit in the body or head generally die immediately." From the Katch River on November 7, he writes confidently that "Sebastopol is not taken yet .. Yesterday there was a fearful fight (the Battle of Inkerman), about 4 times as bad as Alma." The battle was an incredible victory for the English and French, who were greatly outnumbered yet pushed back a Russian assault. With six other letters, two from a sailor on the HMS Psyche, and one from a French soldier; also with Kennedy's promotion to midshipman, on the Bosphorus, 12/11/1853. The Norwegian collier Storstad collided with the 14,191 ton Empress of Ireland in a dense fog in the St. Lawrence River. She sank within 12 minutes with great loss of life and cargo. The Oregon of the Cunard line sank after a collision with a schooner off Fire island, N.Y. on 14 March, 1858. All passengers were saved as was most of the mail.
