#PR3S var., 25c Orange red, manuscript "Specimen" overprint and "A.N.Z.", a most unusual specimen that is the only one recorded, the "A.N.Z." initials being
those of the Third Postmaster General Alexander N. Zevely, without gum as issued, small corner crease and a tiny pinhole, otherwise very fine; a highly important item for the Newspaper stamp specialist or exhibitor; 1987 PF certificate;
ex-Kotanchik.
#PR3S var., 25c Orange red, manuscript "Specimen" overprint, written diagonally across stamp, without gum as issued, small faults including a nick in the top right margin, very
fine appearance; unlisted in Scott and quite likely unique.
#PR3, 25c Orange red, used, with bold blue brush stroke cancel which is typically found on the few existing early used newspaper stamps, deep rich color, couple of
trivial flaws endemic to these, still very fine; remarkably few used examples are known.
#PR5 var.-PR7 var., 5c-25c 1875 Continental special printings of the 1865 Newspapers, imperforate, a marvelous matched set of bottom left corner sheet-margin
singles, each wonderfully well margined all around, in addition to being bright and fresh, intense colors, extremely fine; a handsome and rare set; it is thought that only two sheets of each value were printed (one complete set of sheets we believe
still remains intact), leaving only ten possible sets of singles available to collectors; each lightly signed as Special Printings by E. Costales.
Undersander #E25Aa, 1866 George F. Nesbitt & Co. 15c Lincoln essay, dark red on white vertically laid paper measuring 124x99mm, trivial soiling, very fine;
quite scarce, particularly in such a large uncut format, as most existing examples are cut down to more "standard" cut square size; ex-Brazer.
Undersander #E25Aa-d, 1866 George F. Nesbitt & Co. 15c Lincoln essays, four different, dark red on white vertically laid paper measuring 65x53mm, dark blue on white
vertically laid paper (65x50mm), dark blue on white horizontally laid paper (31x30mm) and dark blue on buff colored vertically laid paper (65x33mm), very fine; scarce group; ex-Brazer.
Undersander #E25Ba, d, 1866 George F. Nesbitt & Co. 3c Lincoln essays, two different, one in pink on white wove paper cut square measuring 69x56mm, other in
pink on canary colored vertically laid paper measuring 69x52mm, very fine and seldom seen.

fine; the only example recorded, as such the catalog value quoted in Undersander will undoubtedly prove not to be an accurate reflection of its fair market value; ex-Barkhausen.
Undersander #E804d, 1869 Fisk Mills of Washington, D.C., 3c Lincoln unadopted currency envelope essay, partially hand drawn and engraved design in red on greenish
wood grained background, a front mounted on thin boxwood, marvelous overall ornate design, with the ornaments around the "3" at top right drawn over, very fine and incredibly handsome; unique in this format; ex-Brazer.
Undersander #E38Ba, c, d, f, 1870 George H. Reay 6c Lincoln embossed essays, three different colors in cut square size, in pink, purple (small mounting thin) and
blue, plus a fourth on yellow brown but cut close to design (embossing cuts paper), mostly very fine; an attractive and scarce group; ex-Brazer.
Undersander #E38Baa, 1870 George H. Reay 6c Lincoln embossed essay in pink, an extremely rare full sheetlet bearing a single essay impression in the center of a
115x136mm sheetlet (after folding), with watermark "A. Pirie & Sons 1869", very fine and handsome; very few of the uncut sheetlets exist in any color; ex-Brazer.
Undersander #E38C var., 6c Blue trial color large die proof, in center of large piece of unwatermarked bond paper folded in half measuring 103x133mm (after
folding), adopted design with uncleared surrounds, very fine; an absolutely stunning and rare essay; ex-Brazer.
Undersander #E38Cb, 6c Blue trial color large die proof, similar to previous lot, but this one with die impression in center of horizontally laid paper measuring
106x141mm, watermarked "A. Pirie & Sons 1869", in addition there is a red monogram at top, several folds to paper not affecting die impression, otherwise very fine and exceptionally rare; ex-Brazer.
Undersander #E38C var., 6c Blue trial color large die proofs, with bust and/or numerals touched with gold or silver, an absolutely stunning group of four trial
color large die essays, each with uncleared surrounds, various sizes, each with either the bust and/or the "6" numerals painted with gold or silver ink, includes just bust touched in gold, bust touched in gold and numerals in silver, bust and
numerals touched in gold, and bust touched in silver and numerals in gold (cut to shape and mounted on small piece), overall very fine; an eye-appealing group perfect for exhibition; ex-Brazer.
Undersander #E38Cl, 6c Dark red, large die hub proof, final adopted design with cleared surrounds in the issued color, die impression on large thin card measuring
119x137mm, very fine and exceedingly handsome; the only recorded example; ex-Wells.
#U85S-U87aS, 6c Lincoln, Reay stamped envelopes, with "SPECIMEN" overprints, the marvelous mounted exhibition collection of 24 different envelopes collected by the
various forms and sizes, in addition to the various colors of the indicias and the envelopes themselves, incredibly comprehensive and nearing completion, all wonderfully annotated on nine exhibition pages, all are quite fresh and very fine; an almost
impossible group to duplicate today; most are ex-White.
#U85-U87a, 6c Lincoln, Reay stamped envelopes, specialized mint entires, the mounted exhibition collection of 19 all different mint entires collected by the
various sizes and knife types in all of the various colors of both the indicia and the envelopes themselves, essentially a complete collection as listed in the UPSS catalog (missing only two), wonderfully annotated on six exhibition pages, plus an
additional page with two different size red on amber entires, each with "Wells, Fargo & Co." imprint (one mint, other unused), overall very fine (UPSS #203/220); several are ex-Barkhausen or Haller.
#U85, 6c Dark red on white, used entire from Victoria to Birmingham, England at the 6c treaty rate, with printed "Wells, Fargo & Co." frank at top center, combination
franking with British Columbia 5c on Bright red (#9), both the indicia and stamp cancelled by manuscript "X" in pencil, clear blue oval "Wells, Fargo & Co./Jan 29 (1871)/Victoria" handstamp at bottom right, blue two-line "For Great Britain/and
Ireland" handstamp vertically at left and much more clear than typically encountered, red Chicago exchange c.d.s. and Birmingham arrival c.d.s. on reverse, minor horizontal bend to cover at bottom, still very fine.
#U85, 6c Dark red on white, used 1873 entire from New York City to Bristol, England, indicia cancelled by NYFM "crossroads" postmark, as well as red "New
York/Jan 11/X" origin exchange c.d.s., most attractive colorless embossed circular return address imprint at top left, Bristol arrival c.d.s. on reverse, very fine.
#U85, 6c Dark red on white, a visually stunning 1873 usage of small entire from Brattleboro, Vt. to London, England, with illustrated corner card depicting a "Cottage
Organ", indicia postmarked with clear bold fancy geometric NYFM cancel, with matching red "New York/May 17/X" exchange c.d.s. alongside, insufficiently addressed and with exceptional "Not/Fully-Addressed" oval handstamp applied in London, then
the cover forwarded by agent to Vienna, Austria and franked with Great Britain 3p Rose, plate 10 (#49) and tied by "London/Ju 2/73" numeral duplex cancel, red London Paid transit and oval "PD" postmarks on front, Vienna bkst., couple of
trivial edge tears, very fine and rare.
