#386, 2c Carmine coil, perf. 12 horiz., attractive appearing single that is well centered with bright color, tied to cover to Cambridge, N.Y. by neat Pittsfield,
Mass. machine flag cancel, dated December 9, 1910, the earliest documented usage, backstamped the same day; edge tears in opening barely affecting the stamp but not affecting this cover's very fine appearance; a very early date for any of the
single line watermarked stamps; 2001 APS certificate; ex-Hart, "Alpha".
#389, 3c Deep violet, Ty. I, "Orangeburg Coil", perf. 12 vert., used, a rather attractive appearing example, strong color in the characteristic genuine shade,
better centering than often found, large area of thinning, which is not uncommon on this rare stamp that was issued specifically for use by the Bell Pharmaceutical Co. to mail their samples to doctors, very fine appearance for this 20th century coil
rarity; 2009 PF certificate.
#389, 3c Deep violet, Ty. I, "Orangeburg Coil", perf. 12 vert., an especially fresh and bright example of this major coil rarity, exhibiting the deep violet color that
is typical of the genuine stamps, tied to an unusually clean bluish green cover of Bell & Company Incorporated Manufacturing Chemists of Orangeburg, New York, March 8, 1911 earliest documented usage, featuring a fully printed "Orangeburg,
N.Y./Mar 8 1911" machine cancel, posted to Berwyn, Pa. and backstamped there, the stamp after lifting for examination was found to have small paper flaws and wrinkles as nearly all examples have due to the bulky nature of the pharmaceutical
enclosures, still a very fine and exceedingly attractive cover. The Orangeburg coil was specifically issued by the Post Office Department for the use of the Bell Pharmaceutical Co. to mail their samples of antacid to doctors around the country.
Apparently no collectors were aware of the issue because of its commercial use by this one firm. The samples were actually quite bulky and the stamp paid the triple domestic fourth class (samples of merchandise) rate. Cancels also show that they were
run through the first class canceling machine. Both of these factors explain why nearly all of the few known covers are wrinkled and soiled, a condition that usually affects the stamps as well. Furthermore, because of all of these circumstances, very
few covers or even stamps from this bulk mailing were saved as such items were routinely thrown away, making for one of the rarest coils issues in United States philately.The cover offered here stands out among the very small population of
only about fifteen covers. Not only is it the earliest documented usage, it is also one of the most attractive of the covers, retaining its blue green color and lacking the usual soiling and strong wrinkles that are found on others, plus the
stamp is bright and attractive. A great cover rarity. Signed by Ward and accompanied by a clear 1998 PF certificate; ex-Ward, Southgate and "Alpha".
#390, 1c Green coil, perf. 8½ horiz., a spectacular mint single, featuring the most immense margins imaginable on a genuine coil, and being flawlessly centered
within these incredible borders, deep intense color and impression, o.g., n.h., superb; 2009 PSE certificate (Superb 98 Jumbo; SMQ $80.00 for a normal 98).
#393, 2c Carmine coil, perf. 8½ vert., gem mint single that is impeccably well centered within exceptionally large margins, radiant color and a vivid impression on
fresh paper, immaculate o.g., n.h., extremely fine; 2009 PSE certificate (XF-Superb 95; SMQ $450.00); only one stamp grades higher (98).
#394, 3c Deep violet coil, perf. 8½ vert., superb mint single that possesses large and perfectly balanced margins all around, rich color and a deep impression,
o.g., lightly hinged, extremely fine; 2001 PF certificate and a 2009 PSE certificate (Gem 100 OGh; SMQ $230.00 for a 98); the highest grade the PSE has given this stamp, being only of only two to receive this exalted grade.
