[Sioux City: Native Americans] A fascinating series of typed and manuscript items concerning the history of Iowa and the Dakotas, with items from Doane Robinson, secretary of the South Dakota State Historical Society and FH Garver of the Iowa
Historical Society. Much of what they discuss is also present, including a 64-page manuscript autobiography of Louis D. Letellier, born in Quebec, who worked in the fur trade with Pierre Chouteau and Peter Sarpy, and later lived amid the ongoing
battles between the Sioux, the Crow, the Yanktonais, and other tribes, and between the Native Americans and their new white neighbors. With a typewritten interview with O.C. Treadway in regard to Theophile Bruguier, 1904, the first white settler in
Sioux City. Also with a typewritten interview with Samuel Bruguier, one of Theophile's sons, 1926. Also with a typewritten sketch of War Eagle by Constant R. Marks, who has helped gather much of the rest of the material. Finally, with an Ambrotype of

[Sinipee, John Plumbe], manuscript Sinipee Wisconsin territorial period postmark, present day Dubuque, Iowa, and "Free" with postmaster "John Plumbe Junr." endorsement
on February 12, 1839 folded letter with integral address leaf to St. Genevieve, Missouri, fresh and very fine.John Plumbe Jr., 1809-57, is historically one of the most important mid-western postmasters in the stampless period. He came to Dubuque in
1836 and by the summer of 1836 owned and promoted the "paper" town of Sinipee, six miles above Dubuque on the Wisconsin side of the Mississippi River. He undoubtedly sought the postmastership of the short lived Sinipee post office (Oct. 5, 1838 to
Feb. 3, 1841) in order to secure the franking privilege as an aid to his well known work as the country's first promoter of a transcontinental railroad. Plumbe is even better known as a pioneer photographer. While in the East lobbying for railroad
funds in 1840, he became fascinated with the new art of daguerreotype and by 1846 owned galleries in Washington D.C., Boston, Philadelphia, Paris and Liverpool, as well as several floating galleries on the Mississippi River. In 1972 six of his 1846
daguerreotypes, found at an Alameda, Ca. flea market, were identified as the earliest known photographic images of the White House, U.S. Capitol Building and the General Post Office. The Sinipee post office was established on October 5, 1838 and
discontinued on February 3, 1841. Postmaster Plumbe was a pioneer photographer and an early promoter of the transcontinental railway.(Image)

second with 3c Green (#158) tied by blue grid to cover to Hamilton, Missouri with clear matching "Council Grove, Kan./Dec 11" datestamp, very fine pair.Council Grove, K.T. is located in Moris County on the Santa Fe Trail. The Post Office was
established on February 26, 1855 while in Wise County. It was the site of a council with the Osage Indians in August l825, to secure treaty rights for freighters through the Indian country to Santa Fe. In 1827, Kit Carson cut the name "Council Grove"
on a buffalo hide and nailed it to the Charter Oak, under which the treaty was signed. Thus the name it bears today. There was also a tree called the Post Office Oak, which had a cache at its base where letters could be left to be picked up by
parties going "that way". For years it was the last place where supplies could be obtained before Santa Fe. In 1857 there was a store called "Last Chance", which still stands today.(imagea)(Image)
