Fort Gratiot, 1828 folded cover with manuscript "Fort Gratiot Mic. Terry/Sep 3d" postmark and postmaster's free frank to Detroit, this being the earliest recorded
postmark, and manuscript "Fort Gratiot/Mic. Terry/Nov 9th" and postmaster's free frank on 1834 folded letter with integral address leaf, this being the latest, latter trifle heavy vertical and horizontal folds, former extremely fine.Fort Gratiot
was established in 1814 by Captain Charles Gratiot and a detachment of 250 men. It was abandoned by the military in 1819. The Post Office was established as Huron Light House on 1 January, 1826 and changed to Fort Gratiot on 16 December, 1826. George
McDougal was the first postmaster. As a military post it was reoccupied about 1829 and then abandoned in 1879.(Image)

[Captain Hitchcock writes from Fort Gratiot] Interesting autograph letter signed by Capt. Ethan Allen Hitchcock, who would become one of the most esteemed American
soldiers of the early 19th century, Fort Gratiot, Michigan Territory, October 17, 1828, entered the mails at Detroit with "Detroit / Mic, T." postmark, October 28, "Ship" handstamp in red and manuscript "27 rate," forwarded to New Haven from
Litchfield on Nov. 3 with straightline postmark and "10" cent added rate for total of "37" due. The captain writes his brother Samuel about the bad weather, which prevents him from continuing to Green Bay (Fort Gratiot was on the mouth of the St.
Clair River, on Michigan's "thumb"). "We were driven back...in a violent gale of wind after losing an anchor & being exposed for nearly two days to considerable danger. We have the Steam boat Henry Clay...I landed my command, upwards of 200 men,
at this old stockade work which has been unoccupied during about nine years... On the (Erie) Canal, the whole route from Albany to Buffalo we did nothing but interrupt their soldiers' drunken fun and smash their whiskey bottles. "My next stopping
place will be the Island of Macinac (it is now written & pronounced). It is near the outlet of (Lake) Michigan & there is on the Island, besides Military Post a trading fur compy. establishment (of the American Fur Company) ..."Fort Gratiot had

[Fort Snelling Collection] - The fabulous Risvold collection of postal and manuscript artifacts offered essentially intact, over 50 items, mostly covers but also many letters and some ancillary material filling an album, starts with folded
letter datelined "Ft. St. Anthony, Feby 20th, 1822" written by the forts builder, Josiah Snelling, about one year after the site was selected and building begun and before it was completed, carried privately to the Indian agent Talliaferro at Prairie
du Chien, this being the earliest recorded communication from this fort in private hands, followed by a manuscript "Fort Snelling/2nd March 1832" postmark, which is the earliest recorded postmark of what is now the State of Minnesota, then June 14th
1828 autographed and franked letter signed by Zachary Taylor while commanding at Fort Snelling, carried by military express to Prairie du Chien, the Fort Snelling Post Office was now in operation and the Taylor frank constitutes the earliest recorded
marking for that office, plus there is another 31st December, 1828 letter signed by Zachary Taylor, then March 1, 1833 manuscript postmark while Unorganized Territory, April 19, 1837 manuscript postmark while Wisconsin Territory, October 12, 1841
manuscript postmark while Iowa Territory, January 31, 1843 manuscript postmark of St. Peters, a trading post of the American Fur Company located directly across from Fort Snelling, manuscript postmarks on June 1845 and November 1846, folded letters
by Father Ravoux, manuscript December 3, 1847 postmark as Unorganized Territory during the residual period between the Iowa Territory and the Minnesota Territory, then a study of the Fort Snelling postmarks from 1850 to 1882 including the only
recorded example of the first postmark with the designation "Iowa", the collection ends with eight folded covers with Fort Snelling datelines from the 1820's and 1830's with manuscript Prairie du Chien postmarks, some with interesting content,
generally fine-very fine; a unique opportunity to acquire this unparalleled historical collection.On August, 24, 1819 Colonel Henry Leavenworth arrived at the confluence of the Mississippi and Minnesota rivers to begin an historic occupation. This
strategic geographical site had first been marked for military occupation by Lt. Zebulon M. Pike in 1805 and a treaty with the Sioux had been concluded for its cession to the United States.Leavenworth was replaced by Colonel Josiah Snelling in August
of 1820 and on September 10th the cornerstone was laid for Fort St. Anthony at the extreme point of land formed by the confluence of the two rivers. This imposing location gave the fort the appearance of having been carved out of the native limestone
upon which it stood. Its name was changed by military orders on January 7, 1825 to Fort Snelling in honor of its builder and commander Josiah Snelling.In the early years of the fort, mail communication was by the expresses of the fur traders and and
the military. Otherwise more or less by accidental opportunity in the form of an individual "just going that way." The river was the great natural highway to Prairie du Chien and civilization. In the summer the mail was carried by boats and in the
winter by foot along the frozen river trails. A system was arranged whereby the mail carrier from Fort Snelling and the one from Prairie du Chien set out about the same time, meeting at Wabasha's Village, where the mail was exchanged and the couriers
returned to their own posts.On May 9, 1828, the first Post Office, in what is now the State of Minnesota, was established at Fort Snelling with the post sutler, Elias T. Laugham, as postmaster. It continued to operate as a post office to June of
1918.From 1819-21 Fort Snelling was in Missouri Territory; from 1821-34 in unorganized territory, 1834-36 in Michigan Territory; 1836-38 Wisconsin Territory; 1838-46 Iowa Territory; 1846-49 unorganized- territory; 1849-58 Minnesota Territory and to
the present time in the State of Minnesota.

[The First postage stamps in Minnesota Territory], Ten Cent Black 1847 Issue (#2), four generous to huge margins, tied to buff cover to Jenks & Ogden at Philadelphia by
green "Saint Paul, Min. Ter./Feb 12" datestamp and additionally cancelled by manuscript "X", fresh and extremely fine. Post Office records show that on 4 February, 1851 the postmaster at St. Paul received and signed for 200 five cent and 1,200
ten cent stamps of the 1847 issue. Eight days later J. Ridgway Jenks posted this cover. To date it is the only known 1847 issue cover from Minnesota Territory. Accompanied by 1991 PF certificate stating that the datestamp is dark blue, with
which opinion we respectfully disagree, illustrated in The United States 1847 Issue: A Cover Census by Thomas J. Alexander on page 283.Accompanied by four additional related covers, the most important being a stampless cover from the same
period with clear true green "Saint Paul, Min. Ter./Apr 7" datestamp and matching "5" rate handstamp, also two Jenks correspondence cover to Pennsylvania, one with 3c Orange brown (#10) cancelled by vivid red "PAID" with matching "Saint Paul, Min.
Ter./Oct 30" datestamp, most likely an 1851 usage, the other a handsome illustrated Day & Jenks cover with 3c Dull red (#26, crease) tied by "Saint Paul, Min./Aug 7, 1860" postmark, and, lastly a Jenks & Ogden illustrated corner card cover in blue

Inbound 1847 Issue Cover to Minnesota Territory, July 5 1849 folded letter with integral address leaf addressed to Capt. Alexander Wilkins at St. Paul, Minnesota
Territory franked by 10c Black (#2), large margins to just touching frame line at upper right, tied by red Goshen, N.Y. datestamp, postmark repeated at left and straightline "PAID" handstamp, very fine, the only reported example.Alexander
Wilkin, to whom the cover is addressed, came to St. Paul, following his service as a captain in the Mexican war, in 1849. At various times he was engaged in a law practice and at one time was the U.S. Marshall for Minnesota. In 1851 to 1853 he was
secretary of the territory and in 1855 he went to the Crimea to study the Crimean War. In 1861 he organized the first company of the First Minnesota regiment and in 1862 he became the colonel of the Ninth Minnesota in the Civil War. Wilkin was killed
in the battle of Tupelo, Mississippi on July 14,1864. Wilkin county was named for Alexander Wilkin.(Image)

green "Saint Paul, Min. Ter./Feb 12" datestamp and additionally cancelled by manuscript "X", fresh and extremely fine. Post Office records show that on 4 February, 1851 the postmaster at St. Paul received and signed for 200 five cent and 1,200
ten cent stamps of the 1847 issue. Eight days later J. Ridgway Jenks posted this cover. To date it is the only known 1847 issue cover from Minnesota Territory. Accompanied by 1991 PF certificate stating that the datestamp is dark blue, with
which opinion we respectfully disagree, illustrated in The United States 1847 Issue: A Cover Census by Thomas J. Alexander on page 283.Accompanied by four additional related covers, the most important being a stampless cover from the same
period with clear true green "Saint Paul, Min. Ter./Apr 7" datestamp and matching "5" rate handstamp, also two Jenks correspondence cover to Pennsylvania, one with 3c Orange brown (#10) cancelled by vivid red "PAID" with matching "Saint Paul, Min.
Ter./Oct 30" datestamp, most likely an 1851 usage, the other a handsome illustrated Day & Jenks cover with 3c Dull red (#26, crease) tied by "Saint Paul, Min./Aug 7, 1860" postmark, and, lastly a Jenks & Ogden illustrated corner card cover in blue
with Blood's Penny Post (1c) Black (#15L18) margins all around, cancelled by "1" in oval and tied by their double circle "Blood's Penny Post/Jan 17/Philada" handstamp, very fine group.
Inbound 1847 Issue Cover to Minnesota Territory, July 5 1849 folded letter with integral address leaf addressed to Capt. Alexander Wilkins at St. Paul, Minnesota
Territory franked by 10c Black (#2), large margins to just touching frame line at upper right, tied by red Goshen, N.Y. datestamp, postmark repeated at left and straightline "PAID" handstamp, very fine, the only reported example.Alexander
Wilkin, to whom the cover is addressed, came to St. Paul, following his service as a captain in the Mexican war, in 1849. At various times he was engaged in a law practice and at one time was the U.S. Marshall for Minnesota. In 1851 to 1853 he was
secretary of the territory and in 1855 he went to the Crimea to study the Crimean War. In 1861 he organized the first company of the First Minnesota regiment and in 1862 he became the colonel of the Ninth Minnesota in the Civil War. Wilkin was killed
in the battle of Tupelo, Mississippi on July 14,1864. Wilkin county was named for Alexander Wilkin.

paper tape repair over partially missing flap, otherwise a very fine pair.
Winona, Minnesota Territory, small cover with original 1857 letter to Honesdale, Pa. with horizontal strip of three 1c Blue, Ty. II (#7), mostly huge margins to just
touching at bottom left, tied by "Winona, M.T./Jul 11" balloon style datestamp, very fine.The Winona Post Office was established as Montezuma on 28 June, 1852 in Wabasha County. The name was changed to Winona on 16 August, 1852 and it became the seat
of the newly formed Winona County. The name Winona is after a Dakota woman who was a cousin of Chief Wabashaw. Legend has it that an Indian maiden named Winona threw herself from the precipice known as "Maiden Rock" on Lake Pepin, rather than marry

world-record time for one mile of 1 minute, 55 seconds was unequalled for more than 30 years. He has been called the first great sports hero of the 20th century.
