edge stains at top, very fine; a desirable usage of the scarce 8p on bluish paper as it is seldom found in its intended use on soldier's letters; 2001 Sismondo certificate.
S.G. #54, 60, 61, 74, 1856-68 ½a Blue, die I, 1a Chocolate, 2a Yellow and 8a Pale rose, die II, singles of the first three and 8a horizontal pair, tied by
"Tellicherry/May 27/16/M-14" duplex postmarks to cover to Paris, "Via Bombay & Brindisi" handstamped directive, nine backstamps indicating transport via rail from Salem on 28 May to Sholapore, arriving with their 30 May traveling post office marking,
then Bombay on 31 May, then Pairs on 21 June and forwarded to St. Jean du Doigt, very fine; an attractive four-color franking paying the triple rate.
S.G. #65, 1865 8a Carmine, die I, two folded covers from the same insurance company correspondence to London, first paying the 1oz rate franked by
horizontal pair and 8p horizontal pair (S.G. #52), the second paying the 1½ oz rate franked by horizontal pair and single (corner missing) and 2a Orange (S.G. #62), all stamps tied by bold strikes of "Forwarded By/Bainbridge & Co./Madras" handstamps
to prevent theft of postage and "Madras, India Paid" 1868 duplex postmarks red London arrival postmarks, very fine and attractive duo.
S.G. #66, 1866 6a Purple Foreign Bill fiscal stamp overprinted "Postage" in green, single tied along with 8p Purple on white (S.G. #52) by bold double
circle "Bombay, India Paid/Jy 24, 66" duplex postmark and ms. strokes to cover to England, "Via Marseilles" directive and Dorking backstamp, cover with mended opening tears at left, otherwise a very fine and scarce usage (Scott #29; $700.00).
S.G. #66, 1866 6a Purple Foreign Bill fiscal stamp overprinted "Postage" in green, single tied along with 8p Purple on white (S.G. #52) by blue "B/1" in
octagon of Calcutta and oval Gillanders, Arbuthnot & Co. forwarding agents handstamp to folded cover to Liverpool, "Via Bombay & Marseilles" directive, Calcutta November 21 1866 and Liverpool backstamp, very fine and scarce usage (Scott #29;
$700.00).
S.G. #69, 1866 4a Green, single tied along with two 8p Purple (S.G. #52, one light stain), by "Kurrachee/18 Ju, 70" duplex postmark to folded letter to
Bordeaux, clear blue double oval "Forwarded By/Jemsetjee Rustomjee/Kurrachee" handstamp across the stamps and repeated at bottom left, "Via Marseilles" directive, boxed "P.D" handstamp and red French entry c.d.s., Bombay and Bordeaux backstamps, very
fine; this forwarding agent is not recorded by Rowe.
S.G. #69, 72, 1866-67 4a Green, die 1 and 6a8p Slate, singles of each tied by blue "B/1" in octagon cancels of Calcutta and green "Stamped" security
handstamps to separate 1867 covers from the same correspondence to London, these being a bank letter and a duplicate letter sent by different routs to insure the receipt of at least one, the 4a cover with "Via Southampton" directive and the 6a8p
cover with "Via Bombay/Via Marseilles" directive, both with red "Calcutta/No 8, 67" backstamps, 6a8p with London Dec. 6 receiver and marked "Keep these good exchanges" and 4a with Dec. 11 receiver and no notations, very fine; an interesting pair
showing that the Marseilles route was both faster and more expensive.
S.G. #72, 1867 6a8p Slate, two covers from the same correspondence from Poona to Guernsey, Channel Islands with "Via Marseilles" directives, first July
1866 franked by 8p Purple, 1a Chocolate horizontal pair and 4a Grey-black (S.G. #52, 60, 46), the other September 1867 franked by 6a8p, which was issued specifically to pay the ½oz rate via Marseilles, very fine duo.
S.G. #79, 1874 1R Slate, tied along with 2a Brown-orange (S.G. #63) by "Madras/May 15" duplex postmark to 1875 folded cover to London, "Via Bombay &
Southampton" directive, London backstamp, forwarded to West Cowes, Isle of Wight with Great Britain 1d Rose-red, plate 147 and ½d Rose-red (S.G. #43, 48) tied by "London/Ju 17, 75" duplex postmarks, Cowes arrival postmark, a very fine and desirable
mixed country franking with the scarce 1 Rupee issue.
S.G. #79, 1874 1R Slate, horizontal pair tied along with 4a Green, die I and 8a Pale rose, die II (S.G. #69, 74) by Hyderabad duplex postmarks to 1876
registered Salar Jung correspondence cover to London, printed "Via Brindisi" directive, boxed registry handstamp, red oval London registry receiving datestamps, cover with opening tear at top and stamps with small faults, nevertheless a very scarce
usage of the 1 Rupee value.
S.G. #101, 1883 1R Slate, horizontal pair and single, tied along with 1a Brown-purple, 2a Pale blue and 4a Olive-green horizontal strip of four (S.G. #88,
91, 95) to 1889 cover from Bombay to London, printed "Via Brindisi" directive, Sea Post Office and London backstamps, very fine and scarce four-color franking paying the 5½ oz. rate.
S.G. #106, 1892 1R Green and aniline-carmine, single tied along with 2a Pale violet (S.G. #116) to 2a Registered envelope to Cairo, Egypt by 1903
Allahabad datestamp, boxed Allahabad registry handstamp, violet "AR" (Advice of Receipt) handstamp, "Insured" label affixed at top left and red ms. "Insured for Five Pounds" notation, backstamped, very fine; an unusual usage of the elusive 1R
bi-colored issue.
S.G. #107-09, 1895 2R-5R Victoria, singles of each along with eight other different Victoria values and two Edward values that were available to the
sender in 1903, all tied by Benares datestamps to registered cover to Bordeaux, red Paris transit and Sea Post Office and Bordeaux backstamps, opening tear at top center and a couple stamps with a small fault or toned spot, fine; though a philatelic
