#RG81, $500.00 Gray, Series 1941, serial #12,
neat and unobtrusive manuscript cancel, marvelously well centered within
large margins, strong color on fresh paper, very fine and choice. A
wonderful example of one of the rarest of all the Silver Tax stamps. We are
aware of only three examples in existence and all are used. The first was
the serial #6 example sold in our April 1998 auction of the Dr. J. Paul
Wampler collection, which was originally part of the Joyce collection. It
realized $8,800.00 versus a then catalog value of $5,000.00. A second copy,
serial #8, was sold as part of the Robert H. Cunliffe collection in 1994
(Daniel F. Kelleher Co., Inc. - sale #596A) and realized $9,900.00. This
third example was part of the marvelous collection formed by Larry Lyons,
whose collection we were privileged to sell in January 2000. Mr. Floyd
acquired the stamp in the Lyons sale for $22,000.00 (including premium),
against a then catalog value of $9,000.00. It is unlikely that either
of the two stamps just mentioned will become available for quite some time.
Therefore, the chance to acquire the Floyd copy may prove to be the only
opportunity for many years to own the cornerstone Silver Tax rarity.
