covers, pristine hand colored, illustrating the "Siege and Capture of
Fort Donelson" Tennessee in February of 1862, C. Magnus imprint at lower
left, series number lower right (Weiss SC-MB-121-132); depicting this major
victory for then Brig. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, the battle was a catastrophe
for the South and gave the Union Army free advance along the Tennessee and

Group of Col. E.E. Ellsworth Patriotic covers and collateral
material, consisting of one used Ellsworth Patriotic cover
franked with 3c Dull red (#26), tied by clean "Albany (N.Y.)/Jun 28" c.d.s.
addressed to Steuben, N.Y., stamp has minor faults, accompanied by a four
page handwritten letter on U.S. flag Patriotic stationery, which
contains fascinating contents concerning a soldier's thoughts on how short
the war will be, the Northern blockade and the upcoming 4th of July
celebrations, a gorgeous blue and red printed song sheet titled,
"Song on the Death of Colonel Ellsworth, The Gallant Zouave",
published by J. Magee of Philadelphia, and 11 different fresh unused
Patriotic covers, published by various printers; a friend and election
aide of President Lincoln, Elmer Ephraim Ellsworth organized a company of
Zouaves for the Union army at the beginning of the war, these troups known
for their exotic Algerian-inspired costumes and flamboyant drill, helped
take Alexandria, Virginia in May of 1861, where Col. Ellsworth was killed
becoming the first prominent Union casualty of the war; a few mounting
marks to the reverse of some envelopes, a clean and very fine grouping of a
popular commemorative subject that would take years to assemble.

extremely interesting accordion-style for the collection and display of
patriotic covers, designed by R.P. Haines and published by J.M. Whittemore
& Co. of Boston in 1861, this folding holder has spaces for 42 items,
printed in red and blue with shield and flag designs both front and back,
accompanying this album is an unused red and blue printed J.M. Whittemore &
Co. Patriotic advertising cover, which markets the aforementioned
Haines' Envelope Holder, album with typical wear and soiling to cover,
interior is fresh and clean, advertising cover is fresh and bright, a very
