#UX37, 3c Red on buff postal card, cancelled by
first day "Washington, D.C./Feb 1/1926" machine cancel, very fine;
most of these first day issues were hand cancelled, only a small fraction
were machine cancelled; 1998 APS certificate; the Mellone catalog value is
for hand cancelled.
#R155, 2c Pink, with "I.R." overprint, tied to
check of First National Bank of Cooperstown, N.Y. by violet "Paid/Jul 1
1898/First National Bank" handstamp and ms. mark, representing a first
day usage, check with trivial tear from usage, very fine and rare;
accompanied by a second example illegally used for postage on a June 30,
1898 pre-first day cover (accompanied by a 1998 APS certificate); a great
pair of items for the specialist; the predate is not listed in Mellone.
#585/685, 1923-1930 Regular issue first day cover
group of 38 mostly better items in the $50.00-$200.00 retail range,
note #584 and #590 with first Colman cachet, five 3c with Lincoln cachets,
coils including #606, several Worden covers, #622 with scarce Anderson,
Ind. pmk., #623 with unlisted Woodrow Wilson cachet, #637 and #639
combination, #639 with unlisted Sidenius cachet, and more, mostly a very
fine lot of worthwhile covers.
#803/983, C24-36, Comprehensive maxi card
collection of 182 mostly different (the slight duplication being
different designs or towns), apparently a complete set of all known Scott
numbers, including Presidentials, Famous Americans and Overrun Nations sets
complete, most are Reid cachets, generally very fine; this is the only
substantial collection of these we have ever seen, and it would be almost
impossible to duplicate.
#27, 1888 "2d." surcharge in green on 2p Lilac,
used, exceedingly well centered for this, lightly cancelled, minor thin
spots, very fine appearance; this was originally a trial color overprint,
one sheet being accidentally put into use at Vryburg, only a very small
number have survived; 2002 BPA certificate (S.G. #23c; £2,750).
#17, 1891 £10 Red Brown, with "B.C.A."
ovpt., unused, strong rich color, fine; a rare and seldom offered high
value; 2002 BPA certificate (S.G. #17; £3,250).
#2, 1851 6p Slate violet on laid paper, an
especially attractive used example in a distinctive and eye-appealing slate
violet shade, strong impression, large margins all around, neat target
pmk., extremely fine; not often seen in this premium condition; 1992 V.G.
Greene certificate; ex-"Crossings" Collection (Unitrade
C$2,000.00).
#2, 1851 6p Slate violet on laid paper, a select
example with large to huge margins, including a part of the adjoining stamp
at bottom, tied to an 1852 folded letter to Boston by a light strike of a
target pmk., matching "Hamilton C.W./Mr 7, 1852" c.d.s. at bottom left,
excellent strike of red two line "Canada/Paid 10 Cts" exchange handstamp,
two light vertical file folds well away from stamp, extremely fine; an
especially choice 1851 Six Pence cover; ex-Dale-Lichtenstein.
#2, 1851 6p Slate violet on laid paper, choice
single featuring large to very large margins, in addition to possessing
outstanding color and impression, tied to large part of cover front to
Montreal by superb strike of target pmk., red "Kemptville, U.C./Sp 17,
1852" c.d.s. at bottom left, straightline strikes of two different red
"Money-Letter" handstamps, two light vertical file folds, very fine; the
stamp itself is extremely fine and quite choice;
ex-Dale-Lichtenstein.
#2b, 6p Grayish Purple on laid paper, a gorgeous
used example of this very scarce stamp, in a quality rarely seen offered,
possessing four lavishly large and wonderfully well balanced margins,
lovely rich color and impression, neat central target pmk., an extremely
fine used gem; 1991 PF certificate; ex-"Alford" and "Crossings"
Collections (Unitrade C$2,000.00).
#4, 1852 3p Red, a gorgeous top sheet-margin
horizontal pair, with large to huge margins all around (except just
touching at bottom of left stamp), deep luxuriant color and impression,
tied by two neat strikes of target pmks. to 1855 cover to New York,
matching "London, U.C./Au 18, 1855" c.d.s. just below, red two line
"Canada/Paid 10 Cts" exchange handstamp, entire with light horizontal file
fold and insignificant tear at top, extremely fine; a wonderfully choice
and desirable Three Cent "Beaver" cover; ex-Dale-Lichtenstein (where
it was a featured item in color).
#4c, 1852 3p Red on ribbed soft paper, a gem used
example of this very scarce and distinctive paper variety, boasting four
lavishly large and especially well balanced margins, rich luxuriant color,
four-ring numeral cancel, extremely fine; seldom encountered in any
quality, let alone in this outstanding condition; 1992 V.G. Greene
certificate; ex-"Crossings" Collection (Unitrade C$750.00).
#5, 1855 6p Slate gray, an especially handsome
used example, with strong rich color and impression on bright paper, large
to mostly huge margins all around, including showing portions of the
adjoining stamps' frame lines at both top and bottom, target pmk.,
extremely fine; not often seen this nice; 1992 PF certificate;
ex-"Crossings" Collection (Unitrade C$2,000.00).
#5d, 1855 6p Gray violet on thick hard paper, a
magnificent quality used example of this rare and difficult stamp,
featuring enormously large margins all around, strong color and impression
on bright paper, unobtrusive numeral in target cancel, extremely fine; a
gorgeous used gem for the finest collection; 1968 BPA certificate; ex-E.
Cary Fox and "Argentum" Collection (Unitrade C$3,500.00).
#7 var., 1855 10p Blue on thin paper, a
spectacular used example of the major re-entry variety from position
29, showing significant doubling in several areas of the design, in a
quality that would be exciting for a "normal" copy of this classic, let
alone for this extremely rare plate variety, strikingly rich color and
impression which displays the variety well, clean crisp paper, lavishly
large margins all around, light grid cancel which is not at all
distracting, an extremely fine gem in every regard; signed H. Bloch and
accompanied by his 1981 certificate, as well as a 1996 V.G. Greene
certificate; ex-"Crossings" Collection (Unitrade #7ii).
#8 var., 1857 1/2p Lilac rose on medium wove
paper, a very pretty used example of this scarce shade, with gorgeous
rich color and a crisp impression on immaculate paper, very large margins
all around, light central strike of a grid pmk. that does not obscure the
design in any way, extremely fine; an especially desirable stamp in this
gem used condition; 1992 V.G. Greene certificate; ex-"Crossings"
Collection (Unitrade #8i; C$800.00).
#9, 1857 7 1/2p Green, a stunning used example of
this classic stamp, possessing four very large and wonderfully well
balanced margins, gorgeous intense color in an especially deep shade,
strong impression as well on bright paper, unusually light strike of a
numeral in target cancel, extremely fine; a highly desirable stamp in this
outstanding condition; 1968 RPS certificate; ex-E. Carey Fox and
