#RS174jc, Mansfield, S. & Co., 1c Blue, pink paper,
block of four imperforate between, an incredibly choice example of the
scarcest of these varieties, wonderfully fresh and fully sound, deep blue
color on bright pink paper, and well centered besides, with full even
perforations all around, very fine and a premium copy of this popular
variety.
#RS175a, Marsden, T.W., 2c Blue, one of the best
centered examples of this major medicine stamp rarity, of which less
than ten examples are recorded, and this was the sole example offered
in the Morton Dean Joyce sale in 1991, nearly all examples are faulty to
some degree, this has a small repair in the top right corner and thin spots
which do not detract from the very fine appearance of this very elusive
stamp; ex-Joyce.
#RS176a, Marsden, T.W., 4c Black, fresh and
reasonably well centered for a stamp that rarely comes with good centering,
deep color and strong impression, couple of trivial pinhead thin specks
which may well be natural on this thin old paper, very fine for this.
#RS177a, Mercado & Seully, 2c Black, imperforate,
certainly one the largest margined and most attractive of the
handful of copies still in existence, this is truly impressive with four
very large even margins, most examples are close or cutting on one or more
sides, in addition it possesses deep color and freshness that are lacking
on most examples, usual thin spots and tiny closed edge tear (virtually
all, if not all, known copies are faulty), which do not detract from the
extremely fine appearance that is unequaled in this rare issue.
#RS179c, Merchant's Gargling Oil, 2c Green, pink
paper, attractive appearing example of a stamp that is far scarcer than
its modest catalog value suggests (15-20 recorded), perforations are full
and even, and clear all around for this notoriously poorly centered issue,
small thins, very fine appearance.
#RS180d, Mette & Kanne, 3c Black, watermarked, a
phenomenally high quality example of a "long" stamp that usually has
faults, this stamp being completely sound and fresh, but most
impressive is the fact that it is virtually perfectly centered within
margins that are much larger than are found on most examples, even in the
famous Joyce sale there was no example that could compare in centering or
attractiveness (including within a block of nine), extremely fine gem; it
is our opinion that this is the finest example available of this issue.
#RS180d, Mette & Kanne, 3c Black, watermarked, a
fresh and attractive mint single, full o.g., h.r., a sound stamp
(tiny inclusion) that has attractive centering, excellent color and
impression, very fine.
#RS181d, Mishier Herb Bitters Co., 4c Black,
watermarked, an usually well centered mint example,
exceptionally sharp impression, tiny natural wrinkle, otherwise choice very
fine and scarce in this premium quality.
#RS186a, Moreheads, 4c Black, a choice and
premium quality mint example of this rare medicine stamp,
exceptionally fresh with full o.g. that is lightly hinged, lacking any of
the faults that the majority of this issue have, well centered, deep color
and sharp impression are among the features that for its overall condition
makes this one of the finest examples of the approximately twelve known
copies.
#RS188a, Perl, Dr. M. & Co., 6c Black, an
unusually fresh and attractive appearing example of this very scarce stamp,
cut to shape as always, particularly intense color and sharp impression,
thins and light crease which nearly all of the twenty or so recorded
examples have simply by the nature of their use, very fine appearance.
#RS191a, Pieters, Bennett & Co., 4c Black,
unusually well centered single, being far better than the majority of
existing copies, fresh with sharp impression, small thin spots as is usual,
very fine appearance.
#RS192a, Pieters, Bennett & Co., 6c Black, far
better centering than any of the surviving examples we are aware of, strong
color, some thin spots (virtually every known example has faults), still
very fine and believed to be the finest quality example of this rarity
available; ex-Lilly and Donaldson.
#RS199b, Ring's Vegetable Ambrosia, 2c Blue, silk
paper, imperforate, a stunningly impressive bottom margin mint
example of a rare stamp, it is believed that there are only about
fifteen examples known mint or used, margins are large on the other
three sides in addition to the huge sheet margin, fresh and particularly
strong deep color, sound in all respects with o.g., h.r., certainly among
the finest, if not the finest, example available, extremely fine gem.
#RS199b, Ring's Vegetable Ambrosia, 2c Blue, silk
paper, imperforate, another gem single with large margins on all four
sides, this stamp is noteworthy for its especially pretty color with
attractive plate wash giving the paper a lovely bluish cast, small natural
inclusion, extremely fine example of a rare imperforate.
#RS203b, Ring's Vegetable Ambrosia, 4c Black, silk
paper, perforated, an exceedingly scarce and high quality mint
single, this stamp is particularly uncommon in that it is well centered
within large margins, nearly all of the perforated issues have the
perforations impinging into the design on one side, while this one is well
clear all around, it also has intense color and impression, o.g., h.r.,
extremely fine and the best quality example of this stamp that we have
seen mint or used of the less than twenty examples yet surviving; a
great rarity, particularly mint; 1994 PF certificate.
#RS203pb, Ring's Vegetable Ambrosia, 4c Black, silk
paper, part perforate, a select mint single, large part o.g.
with some gum loss from hinge removal, remarkably well centered, a fresh
example with bright paper and clear sharp impression, this variety is
considerably scarcer than the fully perforated variety, particularly so
mint and fully sound, this was the best of two singles offered in the Joyce
sale realizing $1,700.00 plus the 10% buyer's premium, extremely fine;
ex-Joyce.
#RS210b, Scheetz's Celebrated Bitter Cordial, 4c
Black, silk paper, perforated, a remarkably attractive and well
centered example, possessing an intense impression on fresh bright paper,
completely sound and extremely fine for this.
#RS212pd, Schenck's Mandrake Pills, 1c Green,
watermarked, perforated, a fresh and well centered mint example,
o.g., lightly hinged, completely sound and in premium condition with large
to extremely large margins, the top perf. tips showing the frame of the
next stamp at top, extremely fine; we are a bit puzzled as to how to guage
the rarity of this in a perforated state, while Scott lists it, it is
unpriced and we have not been able to find any other example of it which
implies that it is of considerable rarity.
#RS213d, Schenck's Pulmonic Syrup, 6c Black,
watermarked, imperforate, pristine single, with large well balanced
margins on all four sides, prooflike impression and completely sound in all
respects, extremely fine gem.
#RS218d, Seabury and Johnson, 1c Lake,
watermarked, a fabulously well centered example of this rare stamp,
strong rich color, normal ms. stroke through "Porous", faint vertical
crease, extremely fine appearance; this was the best example of two offered
in the stellar Morton Dean Joyce sale where it was described with a pulled
perf. at top, in fact this perforation was just laid over on the
perforation next to it and while the flaw is still there it improves
immensely the appearance of a stamp that was already the finest
appearing example of the approximately dozen copies known;
exceptionally rare and choice; ex-Joyce.StampAuctionCentral and StampAuctionNetwork® are
