format, guide line pair of this experimental coil, with four full to
large margins, deep luxuriant color, neatly tied to a small cover to
Springfield, Mass. by large "West Pepperell, Mass./Mar 9, 1908" duplex
handstamp cancel, this being the earliest documented usage of this, the
rarest of all the imperforate coils, Springfield, Mass. arrival
backstamp, very fine; an enormously rare and desirable cover that is one
of the most philatelically significant covers of the 20th century, being
one of only five covers bearing this experimental coil pair, the only one
bearing a guide line pair (which is extremely rare in its own right), as
well as being the earliest known usage of any government issued coil;
this extraordinary cover was featured in a front page article in Linn's
Stamp News (late 2003), after having laid undiscovered for nearly 30
years, before being properly identified and certified by the American
Philatelic Society Expert Committee in October 2003 (whose certificate
