S.G. #CC1, Black "Paid at/San Juan Porto Rico"
Crowned Circle, an unusually clear and attractive strike of this scarce
marking on folded 1857 entire letter to Madrid, Spain, in combination
franking with choice Cuba 1/2r Greenish black with four extra-large margins
(Scott #9 var), most interestingly this cover either did not go through the
Puerto Rican post office or if it did they forgot to apply that post
office's markings, as the stamp is tied by French transit c.d.s. and a
Spanish blue oval grid which was quite likely applied on arrival in Madrid,
lovely British "San Juan Porto-Rico/SP 21/1857" double-arc c.d.s. on the
reverse, via London with "Paid" c.d.s. and "PP" in circle, then via France
to Spain where backstamped, ms. "1/11" British rate, extremely fine; not
only is this an unusual and rare usage, but the condition is outstanding
with all markings, both front and back, well struck and attractive,
magnificent condition rarely found on these covers; Francisco Graus
certificate.(Image)

S.G. #CC1, Black "Paid at/San Juan Porto Rico"
Crowned Circle, a sharp and particularly clear strike of this scarce
marking on folded 1857 entire letter to Cadiz, Spain, in combination
franking with two Cuba 1/2r Greenish blue (Scott #9a), each with four well
clear to huge margins, one showing portion of right sheet margin (trivial
crease at left), tied by black oval cancels with blue double circle cancel
of the General Post Office in San Juan at right, nicely struck British "San
Juan Porto-Rico/NO 13/1857" double-arc c.d.s. on the reverse, ms. "2/2"
British rate, via London with small "Paid" c.d.s., then directly to Spain
where backstamped Cadiz, extremely fine; an unusual franking of 1r local
Puerto Rican postage instead of 1/2r which was normal at this period, plus
its marvelous condition made it a featured item in the 1988 "Murcia" Spain
auction, where this cover realized $8,538.00 even noting the trival
crease; ex-Glassow, "Murcia".(Image)

Valuable mostly mint collection balance to 1940 in two White Ace
albums, loaded with better stamps throughout, not only is there an
excellent run of single stamps, but there are duplicated selections of some
issues (often on the better values) as well as blocks, the 1847-1869 period
is mixed mint and used, and contains high value stamps such as used #1, 12
and 122, while mint/unused is represented by #39, 72 and other higher
cataloging stamps, the Bank Note period is especially valuable, with many
mint stamps to be found, from the 1880's onward the collection is nearly
all mint, with the duplication starting in the late Bank Note issues, the
commemoratives are quite strong, with two sets of the Columbians, one
lacking only the $4.00 and the other complete to the $2.00, plus blocks to
the 50c, two sets of Trans-Mississippis to the $1.00 plus blocks to the
10c, nearly all of the later commemoratives present in both singles and
blocks, Bureau issues to $5.00, plus there are better booklet panes from
this era, nice group of Washington-Franklin heads, with most of the sets
complete or nearly so to the dollar values, plus some duplication on the
perf. 11 issues including two 5c double-errors in blocks on twelve, just
about complete from 1922-1940, air posts complete, with two of all of the
early issues including the Graf Zeppelin set, special deliveries complete
plus extra early values, nice run of postage dues, with many cataloging
several hundred dollars apiece, also Offices in China and parcel posts
complete, the collection concludes with a complete and above average group
of Confederate States general issues, the condition on the earliest stamps
is a little mixed, although pleasant surprises will be found, from the Bank
Notes onward the quality improves, although there are some small faults in
this period, there are many very fine stamps as well, including several
never hinged; a tremendous lot whose catalog value (as well as retail
value) will be extraordinarily high; 35 PF certificates accompany.

9/205, O16
#9/205, O16, Small Balance of the John C. Chapin collection,
consists of a total of 68 stamps including several pairs, mostly mint or
unused plus a few early used and a few that appear unused but are faintly
cancelled, overall this group is surprisingly attractive with generally
quite nice centering, testifying to Mr. Chapin's eye for attractive stamps,
a sampling of some the better items we note include used #19b and #27, mint
examples of #37, 64b and 78, plus regummed examples of #138 with split
grill and #166, both well centered and attractive, faults are present,
often being such things as disturbed gum or regummed, but usually the flaws
are quite unobtrusive, even so catalog value is very high and one will find
many very desirable stamps, examination will prove worthwhile; accompanied
by 22 PF certificates and one 2003 PSE certificate.

11/1229a, C1/QE4a
#11/1229a, C1/QE4a, Valuable quality mint collection balance of
several hundred different in two Lighthouse albums, collection starts with
a very modest selection of 19th century through the Bank Notes, it becomes
serious with the late Bank Notes of the 1880's and lacks only a couple of
lower values of having the Small Bank Notes complete, scattered (but
quality) low value Columbians and Trans-Mississippis are present, plus a
$2.00 Columbian and $1.00 Trans-Mississippi, also nice Bureau issues
including several dollar values, 20th century is more comprehensive with
many premium stamps present including excellent booklets panes throughout
(usually n.h.), most commemoratives are complete starting with the 1901
Pan-Americans, Washington-Franklin issues are particularly nice with many
well centered stamps and some never hinged, coils are collected in line
pairs, some of a dubious nature not counted, after that regular issues and
commemoratives are virtually complete to the 1960's starting with a never
hinged set of the 1922-25 Issue, the collector was especially conscious of
varieties and extra examples showing these will be found through out, air
mails are complete to the 1990's including the Zeppelin issues, parcel
posts are virtually complete, plus a nice range of quality postage dues
from early to present, offices in China are complete less #K15-16, includes
a smattering of better officials, and parcel posts and parcel post dues
cplt., finally a quality group of nine different CSA, this collector had an
eye for quality and normally selected fresh and well centered stamps, a few
faults will occasionally be discovered, and once in a while a regummed
stamp got past him, overall the collection uniformly has o.g. including the
19th century, and never hinged stamps are found throughout, being much more
regular in the later issues, most are fine-very fine; a valuable collection
worthy of careful examination; accompanied by 22 PF or PSE certificates.

#11/1240, C2/QE4, Mint and used collection of several hundred in two
Lighthouse albums, starts with only a modest amount of 19th century which
is largely used, includes Columbians mint to the 30c, Trans-Mississippis
complete mint to the 50c, plus Pan-Americans cplt. and many later
commemoratives, regular issues are mostly used through the 1902-03 Issue
and mixed mint and used through the Washington-Franklin issues, includes a
mint set of the 1922-26 Issue, plus later rotary press issues, Kans. and
Nebr. cplt., 1938 Presidentials and Liberty Series complete mint, also
includes air posts, special delivery, parcel posts and other

of that word, on the one hand there are just fine stamps and some with
faults, much of the used fits in that category, but on the other hand there
are also mint stamps that are extremely fine and sometimes never hinged

14/702, C1/QE4
#14/702, C1/QE4, The high quality balance of the Dr. Robert N. Silva
collection, neatly arranged in a Lighthouse hingeless album, the early
issues are fairly sparse, with a smattering of mint, unused and used
stamps, the value really comes in strong from 1879 onward, and the
collection is practically all mint from there, loaded with medium priced
regular, commemorative and back-of-the-book stamps cataloging up to several
hundred dollars apiece, the quality of the collection is very high, with
most stamps having been purchased on an individual basis with an eye for
centering, color and overall visual appeal, in fact there are only a
handful of stamps in the entire collection with any kind of faults (and
these faults are very minor), nearly every stamp will grade at least very
fine, with a high percentage being extremely fine, and some really choice
gems will be found among the lower cataloging items, nearly all with o.g.
and a good many are never hinged, there are even some collateral items such
as two Great Britain Penny Blacks and some Columbian Exposition tickets;
not only will the total catalog value add up to an impressive number, but
many of the stamps will retail in excess of their catalog value; 70 PF and
4 PSE certificates accompany, almost all from the 1990's.
