#29, 5c Brown, Ty. I, a very fresh example of
this terribly difficult and seldom offered mint stamp, featuring rich
luxuriant color and impression on bright paper, centered just a bit to top,
but far better centered than most mint copies we have seen, full clean
o.g., lightly hinged, certainly very fine for this; the first sound,
full original gum example we have offered in our auctions in years;
1989 PF certificate.(Image)

#31, 10c Green, Ty. I, position 100R1, an
incomparable bottom sheet-margin mint single, possessing essentially
perfect centering amid uncharacteristically large margins, brilliantly
fresh, with rich vibrant color and a clean crisp impression on bright
paper, uniformly even and intact perforations all around, full original
gum, lightly hinged, superb. The enormous rarity of the 1857 Ten Cent
Green Type I in mint condition, particularly with original gum, cannot be
overstated. To find one offered at auction in any condition happens
probably no more than one or twice a year (if that "frequent"). To find one
in the spectacular quality offered here is an occasion that easily
qualifies as a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence. In fact, this is only the
second appearance at auction of this extraordinary stamp, as for years it
had always been part of a larger multiple that was (only fairly recently)
broken up to yield what is, without question, the finest mint Scott #31 in
existence. This stamp made its first appearance on the auction market
as a single in our September 13, 2002 auction of the Thomas C. McKinney
collection. It was acquired by Mr. Lewis for his collection after
considerable bidding competition, ultimately realizing a record price of
$38,500.00. We fully expect that its appearance now will again engender
spirited bidding, resulting in another impressive realization. In our view,
this is one of the key stamps to acquire if one ever hopes to fulfill the
goal of acquiring the finest known mint example of each United States
stamp. Accompanied by a 2000 PF certificate.(Image)
