"Specimen", handsome bottom right corner margin block of four, one
of only four such "Specimen" blocks of four recorded, with
inter-panneau gutter at right, deep rich colors, centered a bit to
right as virtually all examples of this Specimen are found, o.g., bottom
right stamp n.h., fine; ex-Holbeach (A$6,000).
#55xb, £2 Black and rose, double handstamp
"Specimen", one inverted, well centered, fresh, o.g., minor h.r., very
fine; an extremely rare "Specimen" error, being one of only two
recorded, this being the example illustrated on page 2/129 in the
Australian Commonwealth Specialists' Catalogue (A$10,000).
#55z, £2 Black and rose, the important CA
monogram single, strong rich colors, centered just a bit to right,
large part o.g., fine.Monograms of the £2 First Watermark are among
the greatest rarities of Australian philately. In fact, the mint monogram
single offered here is one of only two in private hands. There is a third
mint single but it is in the R.T.P. Chapman Collection now part of the
Australia Post archival collection. In addition, there are three specimen
pieces - a block of six (see next lot), a block of four and a single -
bringing the total number of CA monograms recorded to only six.An
exciting opportunity to acquire one of the most important Australian
monogram items in existence (A$75,000).
#55x/z, £2 Black and rose, handstamped
"Specimen", bottom left corner margin CA monogram block of six,
rich luxuriant colors, centered just a bit to right, o.g., fine and
striking.This extraordinary multiple is the only monogram block of six -
the most highly prized configuration for monogram collectors - known for
either the CA or JBC monogram. Of the CA monogram pieces there are only a
total of six recorded, this block, a block of four and a single all with
"Specimen" handstamps, plus three mint singles, one of which is housed in
the Australia Post archival collection.A spectacular showpiece monogram
multiple for the finest collection (A$60,000).
#55zb, £2 Black and rose, the extraordinary
JBC monogram single, incredibly well centered within large margins,
deep rich colors, o.g., lightly hinged, natural horizontal gum bend which
follows line of watermark, very fine.This JBC monogram single is one of
the most famous rarities in Australian philately, as it is the only known
example in private hands. There are two others recorded, both of which are
institutionalized - a strip of three in the Royal Collection and a mint
single in the R.T.P. Chapman Collection which is now part of the Australia
Post archival collection.No collector can ever hope for "completion" in
a monogram collection without acquiring this famed single. One of the key
highlights of the incomparable Arthur Gray Collection. (A$75,000).
#55c vars., £2 Black and rose Sperati
forgery, a quartet of photographic prints from negatives used by
Sperati to produce his master forgeries, includes a large "die proof" of
just the kangaroo vignette, as well as a cut down version, and "small die"
proofs of the kangaroo vignette in negative and a £2 value without the
kangaroo vignette, three of the four pieces with "Sperati/Reproduction"
handstamp applied by the BPA when they acquired Sperati's entire stock,
very fine; wonderful collateral items.
#55cc, £2 Black and rose Sperati forgery, large
"die proof", a lovely example of this rarely seen "die proof", which
really shows off the incredible workmanship of this master forger, signed
by Sperati himself at bottom in pencil, as well as having his large yellow
circular logo on reverse, very fine; probably no more than three or four
exist (A$8,000).
#55c, £2 Black and rose Sperati forgery, a
choice "used" example of the remarkable forgery created by Jean de Sperati,
who made his forgeries by "fading out" genuine used lower values (so that
the stamp will have a genuine watermark and cancellation) and printing the
forged impression by photolithography, with dated 1913 "N.S.W." c.d.s.,
well centered and margined, extremely fine and rare; it is estimated that
only two "mint" copies are known and about two dozen "used" copies; with
"Sperati Reproduction/114" handstamp on reverse (A$5,000).
#55c, £2 Black and rose Sperati forgery,
"used" example with Liverpool Paquebot "Posted at Sea" receiving
cancellation, rather well centered, especially deep colors, very fine and
rare; 1999 BPA certificate (A$5,000).
#1bc/42ba, ½p to 5/- First Watermark issue, large
"OS", a complete mint "set" to the 5/-, including both Die types on the
1p and 3p, all quite fresh and with rich colors, o.g., few with minor h.r.,
mostly l.h., with a few n.h., centering ranges from fine to very fine;
scarce group (A$4,590).
#2ba/z/za, 1p Red, large "OS", a remarkable
inter-panneau block of 24 (12 x 2), being the complete bottom two
rows from Plate B, with left and right pane no monogram blocks,
position R54 showing the "right frame retouched" variety, o.g., various
flaws including some thin spots and perf. separations, nevertheless a rare
large "OS" no monogram multiple; ex-Kilfoyle.
#2ba/cb, 1p Red, Die I, large "OS", offset,
choice mint single showing characteristic light offset, o.g., n.h., fresh
and fine; the most prominent offsets found on the 1p First Watermark are
typically on stamps punctured large "OS" (for hinged A$400).
#2ba/cb/zc, 1p Red, Die I, large "OS", offset, a
most unusual JBC monogram single from Plate C showing a very strong
offset, even including the "JBC" monogram, the only monogram single we have
encountered showing such a prominent offset, o.g., minor h.r., small
selvage flaws, fine (for non-monogram single A$400+).
#3ba/b, 1p Red, Die II, large "OS", double
perforation, most unusual used block of four, bottom pair with double
horizontal perforations at top and sides where they are virtually
coincident with the original perforations, neat Tasmania c.t.o. postmarks,
full o.g., top pair with h.r., fine.
#5bb/z, 2p Grey, large "OS", very scarce bottom
left corner margin CA monogram block of six from the left pane of
Plate 2, especially well centered, o.g. (faintly toned), n.h., very fine
(for hinged A$2,000+).
15ba var., 4p Orange, large "OS", punctures
inverted, two singles (both with small pieces of stamps missing) tied
to small piece with "O.H.M.S." imprint by two strikes of "Adelaide/Ap
30/15/Registered" c.d.s., some light foxing and piece folded between
stamps, inverted "OS" punctures, particularly used, are seldom
encountered.
#15ba/z, 4p Orange, large "OS", an exceedingly
handsome and rare bottom left corner margin JBC monogram block of
six from Plate 2, sumptuously rich color on fresh paper, nicely
centered, pristine o.g., n.h., lightly folded along bottom row of
horizontal perforations, light horizontal crease in extreme bottom of sheet
selvage, overall fine-very fine; JBC monogram pieces of this value are
extremely rare, and especially so punctured "OS" (for hinged monogram strip
of three and three n.h. singles A$10,875+).
#15ba/zb, 4p Orange, large "OS", gem bottom right
corner margin CA monogram strip of three from Plate 2, each stamp in
the strip being incredibly well centered and margined, deep vibrant color,
o.g., n.h., light diagonal crease in right sheet selvage only, extremely
fine; an incredibly rare and desirable "OS" monogram strip (for hinged
