proof on unwatermarked blue wove paper, right sheet-margin horizontal
pair, with the right stamp displaying a large void area of printing along
the right edge, exceptionally large margins all around, couple of natural
microscopic pinholes, plus edge flaws along extreme edge of sheet selvage,
very fine for this scarce trial color plate proof; according to the ACSC
"these are poorly printed and are apparently make-ready printers
proofs....approximately 40 survive" (A$2,000).
#12PP(1)A, 3p Black, Die I, imperforate trial color
proof on unwatermarked blue wove paper, horizontal pair of this rare
plate proof, well margined, with a horizontal crease and the usual thinning
affecting almost all known copies, very fine appearance (A$2,000).
#12PP(1)Ba 3p Black, Die I and Die II, imperforate
trial color proof on unwatermarked blue wove paper, one of the few
surviving se-tenant blocks of four displaying two of Die I and two
of Die II within the same multiple, large to very large margins all
around, usual paper flaws and creasing characteristic of these poorly
printed proofs, very fine appearance; according to the ACSC "approximately
40 (examples of this proof) survive, including a very few blocks"
(A$7,000).
#12E, 3p Pale olive green, Die I, fresh right
margin block of four, strong distinctive shade, o.g., n.h., fine-very fine;
a handsome and pristine block (A$2,200+).
#12Aa, 3p Olive, Die I, watermark inverted,
pristine inter-panneau mint single, brilliantly fresh, well
centered, o.g., n.h., very fine; a select example (for hinged A$275).

#12Aa/z, 3p Olive, Die I, watermark inverted, the
unique bottom left corner margin CA monogram strip of three from
Plate 2, rich color, attractively centered, o.g., hinge reinforced
perforations in one row of bottom selvage, light selvage crease at bottom
left, fine-very fine; monogram pieces of the 3p with inverted watermarks
are extremely rare, with only three recorded in total and this being the
only one with CA monogram (A$3,500).
#12Aa/zb, 3p Olive, Die I, watermark inverted, an
impressive bottom margin JBC monogram block of ten from Plate 2,
wonderfully fresh and well centered throughout, o.g., several stamps n.h.
including the monogram single, very fine and choice; a very rare multiple,
as only two JBC monogram items are recorded with inverted
watermarks, this block and a single (A$4,000).
#12Bbf, 3p Olive, Die I, imperforate three sides from
the top of the sheet, a magnificent top right corner sheet-margin
horizontal pair of this important error rarity, each stamp being completely
imperforate on three sides, being only perforated horizontally at bottom
and with vertical perforations only in the top sheet selvage, brilliantly
fresh and bright, pristine o.g., never hinged, lightly folded vertically
between the stamps (as are other known examples), extremely fine.The
only recorded surviving pieces of this error consist of this lovely pair
and a strip of four, both from the left-hand pane, a horizontal pair from
the right-hand pane with the margin trimmed at top (ex-Kevin Nelson
collection sale) and a used single. This pair, along with the strip of
four, originally formed a strip of six and was part of the extraordinary
philatelic collection of Sir Gawaine Baillie. Mr. Gray, having researched
that the strip resided in the Baillie collection, contacted Sir Gawaine
through his philatelic agent, and was able to persuade him to sell him a
pair from the strip in a private transaction. The strip of four was fairly
recently sold in the May 2005 sale of Sir Gawaine Baillie's collection
(Sotheby's - Volume III - Australian States and Australian Commonwealth).
Having a catalog value of A$40,000 per pair (A$80,000 total), the strip
realized A$149,500 (including a 15% buyer's premium), an Australian auction
record price for an issued Commonwealth of Australia stamp item.This
pair from the Gray collection is the only sound pair currently available to
collectors and it may well be a generation, or more, before one will have
the opportunity to acquire one of the premier rarities in all Australian
philately; ex-Ambrose, Baillie. (A$40,000).
#12Aa/c, 3p Olive, Dies II and I se-tenant pair,
watermark inverted, a most unusual and rare right inter-panneau
margin horizontal pair, left stamp Die II and right stamp Die I, well
centered, fresh color, o.g., l.h., extremely fine; the only pair we could
find searching through all of the name sale collections of Kangaroo stamps
(unlisted in ACSC as a se-tenant pair with inverted watermark).
#12Az, 3p Olive, Die I, bottom left corner margin
CA monogram strip of three from Plate 2 (lower), outstanding
centering, fresh color, o.g., h.r. on one stamp and in sheet selvage, a
very fine and exceedingly choice example of this rare monogram (A$2,500).
#12Azb, 3p Olive, Die I, pristine bottom right
corner margin JBC monogram strip of three from Plate 2 (lower),
strong fresh color, nicely centered, o.g., n.h., fine-very fine (for hinged
A$2,500).
#12Bzd, 3p Olive, Die II, very rare bottom left
corner margin no monogram strip of four from the left pane of Plate
1 (upper), with all stamps being Die II, well centered, rich color, o.g.,
couple of h.r.'s, some hinge rejoined separated perforations largely in
sheet selvage of the second vertical row, fine-very fine; very few no
monogram multiples survive today (A$5,000).
#12Bzd, 3p Olive, Die II, a showpiece bottom left
corner margin no monogram block of sixteen (4x4) from the left pane
of Plate 1, all Die II except positions 39, 40 and 52 are Die I, used, with
light strikes of "Melbourne/De 3/13" c.t.o. postmarks, exceedingly well
centered and brilliantly fresh, o.g., n.h., lightly folded along horizontal
row between bottom row and sheet selvage, light diagonal crease in bottom
left selvage just catching a tip of the stamp, overall very fine; an
eye-catching example of this very rare no monogram multiple (for a mint
strip of three A$5,000).
#15, 4p Orange, fresh mint block of four, vibrant
color in a pale orange shade, particularly well centered, o.g., three
stamps l.h., bottom left stamp n.h., a very fine and choice block
(A$900+).
#15, 4p Orange, an extraordinary quality bottom
margin inter-panneau mint block of four, brilliantly fresh and
crisp, with rich color in a deep shade, wonderfully well centered, o.g.,
stamps n.h. (l.h. in gutter only), choice very fine; ex-Kilfoyle (as
four n.h. singles A$1,800+).
#15C, 4p Yellow orange, fresh mint example of
this scarce and distinctive shade, well centered, vivid color, o.g., l.h.,
mild horizontal bend, still very fine (A$600).
#15C, 4p Yellow orange, top left corner margin
mint block of four of this elusive shade variety, gorgeous color, well
centered, o.g., top left stamp barest trace of hinging, other three stamps
n.h., small thin spot and diagonal crease in sheet selvage only, stamps
very fine and choice (for four hinged stamps A$2,400+).
#15C, 4p Yellow orange, brilliantly fresh top
right corner margin block of four, radiant color, attractively centered,
o.g., n.h. (particularly scarce thus), l.h. in sheet selvage only, couple
of natural diagonal gum bends, very fine (for four hinged singles
A$2,400+).
#15z, 4p Orange, bottom left corner margin JBC
monogram strip of three from Plate 2 (lower), bright color, attractive
centering, o.g., trivial h.r., very fine; one of the few recorded example
