Fr. Colonies Yvert #3, 4,
French Colonies Yvert #3, 4, 5, 1859-65 40c Vermilion vertical strip of three and single, along with 10c Yellow bister single and two 20c Blue singles, a very
colorful franking, all with four clear to large margins except for the 20c values which are slightly cut in on one side, all tied to 1869 cover to France by black lozenge cancels, small "Guadeloupe/Pointe-a-Pitre/29 Juin 69" double-circle c.d.s.,
black boxed "PD" handstamp, marked "voie d'Angleterre" but carried by French packet with clear blue St. Nazaire entry transit, backstamped Bordeaux, small piece missing at top and light vertical fold affecting one 20c value, fine triple-rate cover;
the sender intended that this should go by British packet and franked it with three times the 70c rate (2Fr10c), however it was routed by French packet instead and thus was overpaid by 60c; a most interesting and extremely rare franking;

Fr. Colonies Yvert #13, 2
French Colonies Yvert #13, 22, 1871-72 40c Orange horizontal pair and single, and 15c Bister block of four and horizontal pair, all making for a striking
British packet triple-rate franking to France paying 2Fr10c, all with virtually clear to large margins, all the markings are the scarcer blue color though with a tinge of black which was the predominant color used in this post office, includes
the mute lozenges tying the stamps to this 1873 entire folded letter to Granville, clear "Guadeloupe/Pointe-a-Pitre/26 Juin 73" double-circle c.d.s. and the boxed "PD" handstamp, also has a clear blue packet entry c.d.s., backstamped, very faint
horizontal file fold affecting the right pair of the block (barely noticeable) and scissors cut in left stamp of the 40c pair, neither of which affects the impressive very fine appearance of this cover; the use of blocks on cover is exceptionally
rare as the use of strips was preferred and is seen far more often; an exceptionally rare cover; signed R. Calves.(imagea)(Image)

Fr. Colonies Yvert #6, 22
French Colonies Yvert #6, 1865 80c Rose block of four, a highly select block of this key first issue high value with full large margins all around, in mixed franking with
1872 15c Bister horizontal pair (Yvert #22, slightly cut in), the pair is tied to an 1873 cover to France by rare blue "GPE" in lozenge of dots cancel with a similar strike centrally positioned on the block of four, matching small blue
"Guadeloupe/Pointe-a-Pitre/26 Oct 73" double-circle c.d.s. and blue boxed "PD" handstamp, carried by British packet with this impressive franking paying the five times 70c rate of 3Fr50c, blue packet transit, backstamped Rouen, cover opened out and
slightly refolded for aesthetic reasons, still very fine for this great rarity.During the normal period of use of the Eagle series in the 1860's the usual cancel used was the mute lozenge of dots in its various renditions of 7x7 or 8x8 points. Later,
for a short period in the 1870's, an 8x8 point lozenge with the initials of the colony in the center was introduced. In Guadeloupe this cancel is very scarce and was infrequently used even during the 1870's. The high value franking on this cover
involves the late usage of the 80c Eagle. Blocks of four of this value and combination frankings of the Eagle issue with the later Ceres values are rarities in there own right, but this extremely rare cover is the only recorded 80c Rose block of
four with the rare "GPE" lozenge cancel; exceptionally attractive and a marvelous showpiece for the most advanced Guadeloupe collection; signed J.F Brun; ex-Levett.(imagea)(Image)

French Colonies Yvert #3, 5, 1859 10c Yellow bister and 40c Vermilion horizontal strip of three, an unusual franking with two singles of the 10c, two stamps are
missing (two 5c values) and a 10c that does not belong has been added, a triple-rate franking via British packet of the 50c rate, stamps have clear to large margins, all tied by black lozenge cancels to 1863 folded cover with black
"Pointe-a-Pitre/Guadeloupe/25 Juin 1863" rimless c.d.s., red boxed "PD" handstamp and very rare black "Apres Le Depart" handstamp, a "too late" marking indicating that the letter had missed the expected ship of passage, black Calais entry transit,
backstamped Granville, very fine except as noted; according to Robert Stone this is the earliest recorded use of the "Apres Le Depart" marking of any of the French Colonies; an important and rare cover.(imagea)(Image)

Fr. Colonies Yvert #3, 4,
French Colonies Yvert #3, 4, 5, 1859-65 10c Yellow bister, 20c Blue and 40c Vermilion, each a nice four-margin single, tied to 1869 folded cover to Paris by delicate
lozenge of dots cancels, matching light but distinguishable "Guadeloupe/Trois-Riveires/26 Mars 69" double-circle c.d.s., in addition to the red boxed "PD" handstamp there is a very rare red "Apres Le Depart" (too late) handstamp, Basse Terre transit
on the reverse, carried by British packet with blue packet entry transit, minor cover fold split at bottom, very fine; this is the first example of the "Apres Le Depart" marking recorded from a small village and may be possibly unique in red;
an exceptionally rare cover from this small village at the south end of the island of Basse Terre and particularly desirable in this attractive three-color franking.(imagea)(Image)
French Colonies Yvert #1, 1862 1c Olive, two horizontal pairs, both very attractive with just clear to large margins all around, in sole franking on 1871 entire prices
current to Demerara (British Guiana) paying the local printed matter rate, "Price Currt." in manuscript above the stamps which are just tied by black lozenge cancel with black "Guadeloupe/Pointe-a-Pitre/16 Mai 71" double-circle c.d.s. below,
given to the British Agency for transmission to this British Colony but not marked paid as there was no agreement with the British Agency to pre-pay printed matter, small red British "Guadaloupe/MY 17 71" c.d.s. on the reverse and similar Demerara
backstamp, large "1" handstamp applied on arrival for 1p due, exceptionally fresh and attractive, choice very fine; printed matter mail is among the rarest type of mail to acquire because it was usually thrown away, this example is amazingly rare not
only because there was so little of it saved, but because there was no agreement between the French and the British Agency for sending such mail so prepayment was not possible; only three such printed matter covers are known sent through the
British Agency, the other two are each franked with an incorrect 5c Green; this is the only recorded example correctly franked with the proper 4c rate for the local postage and a great rarity in this remarkably select quality.(imagea)(Image)

of Cuba applied on arrival for 2 reales local postage due, minor edge wear to the cover with a couple tiny tears not affecting the stamps or markings, an attractive three-color franking and an extremely rare cover in all its aspects;

"Guadaloupe/Paid/OC 11 70" c.d.s. was applied and the British rate of "4" was marked in red crayon, similar small red "Guadaloupe/OC 11 70" c.d.s. and black St. Thomas British c.d.s. on reverse, bold "1" real handstamp for local Cuban postage, stains

Fr. Colonies Yvert #20
French Colonies Yvert #20, 1872 30c Brown vertical pair, four even margins, trace of edge toning, tied to 1876 folded cover to St. Thomas by black lozenge cancel,
quite clear strike of "Paq. Ang./Pointe-a-Pitre Guade/10 Nov. 76" double-circle sorting c.d.s., posted through the British Agency with the later "Guadaloupe/Paid/NO 11 76" c.d.s. on the front, British rate of "4d" was marked in red crayon,
backstamped St. Thomas, side flap missing with some splitting of the cover folds and refolded for appearance, fine; a very late posting of the British Agency in the U.P.U. period which is unusual because the U.P.U. rate was a third less; certainly
among the last covers carried by this service and as such very rare.(imagea)(Image)

Fr. Colonies Yvert #20
French Colonies Yvert #20, 1872 30c Brown horizontal pair, a marvelously choice pair on an incredibly rare and high quality 1875 entire folded letter to French
Guiana, the pair has excellent color and large even margins all around, neatly tied to cover by beautiful strike of black 8x8 points lozenge cancel, the black "Paq. Ang./Pointe-a-Pitre Guade/16 Mars 75" sorting c.d.s. is equally well struck,
posted through the British Agency with rare "Guadaloupe/Paid/MR 17 75" c.d.s., "4" pence British rate marked in red crayon then marked "2" indicating that it was a double-rate letter with a large ms. "1" marked through the black "PD" boxed handstamp
for one shilling due, small red British "Guadaloupe/MR 17 75" c.d.s. on the reverse, most importantly is an extraordinarily rare black "Demerari/Paq. Fr. C No.1" octagonal French packet c.d.s. (Salles #1531) to the right of the stamps, this
cover is especially choice with all of these rare markings being well struck and clear, extremely fine in every regard; this unique cover is going from one French Colony to another, but evidently the most efficient way to effect this passage was
through the British Packet Agency which carried it to British Guiana where it was transferred at Demerara to the French packet receiving this extremely rare packet marking, whether the postage due for being overweight was ever collected is not known,
but this is the only recorded cover with this French packet marking; an astounding rarity of both Guadeloupe and French maritime mail; signed R. Calves, L. Miro.(imagea)(Image)

stamps tied by black 8x8 point lozenge cancels, slightly indistinct black "Guadeloupe/Pointe-a-Pitre/10 Mai 68" double-circle c.d.s., turned over to the British agency and possessing a quite clear strike of the especially rare black

reverse, backstamped Lima, a couple stamps affixed slightly over the edge causing small flaws and a horizontal file fold affecting two 10c singles, none of which detracts from the impressive and very fine appearance of this amazing cover; red was the
predominant color used for the Crowned-circle paid postmarks because red was normally associated with prepayment, black and blue were also used in Guadeloupe, both of which are extreme rarities; this cover is one of the most remarkable
eye-catching examples of the very few that are known and in addition posted to an especially rare destination.(imagea)(Image)
