#308/Q9, The balance of the Darrah "Shanghai/China"
black overprints collection, a remarkable assemblage of 33 stamps, all
with this very scarce and unauthorized local overprint by John M. Darrah,
the U.S. Shanghai postal agent, includes a mint single of the terribly
elusive 13c 1902 Issue, plus there are eight perf. 12 Washington-Franklin
mint singles ranging from the 1c to 50c value, plus an additional nine
different values used on piece, there is a complete set of nine mint Parcel
Post stamps to the 25c, plus a 1c value with an inverted overprint in blue,
and finally there is a mint single of a 2c Postage Due, mint stamps with
o.g., condition a bit mixed as always on these stamps, overall a fine
group; lots containing this large a variety of stamps with Darrah
overprints are almost never seen today. (image

post card from Empire to Gorgona, 2c on a Treasury Department corner card
cover to the U.S., and concluding with a December 7, 1904 cover from Ancon

Unoverprinted United States 2c Carmine, Ty. I
(#319g), horizontal pair from the bottom of a booklet pane franking a
most unusual cover sent from the battleship U.S.S. Ohio at anchor in
Cavite Bay and addressed to Des Moines, Iowa, pair (which had faults) is
tied by largely readable "Manila, P.I./May 9 (1905)" duplex cancel, sent
via mail paquebot and delivered to Manila, P.O. as indicated by a curious
and rare bold negative "S" handstamp, being one of only five covers
known with this marking, sender's endorsement on reverse "U.S.S.
Ohio/Cavite, P.I.", as well as Des Moines bkst., some slight aging to cover
in addition to normal usage wear, cover opened out for display, fine; a
marvelous piece of Philippines postal history.
