319c |
#319c, 2c Scarlet, Ty. I, U.S. Automatic Vending
Machine experimental first coil, brilliantly fresh, o.g., minor h.r.
reinforcing a few separated perfs., fine; early in 1907 the first
experimental coil of the U.S. Automatic Vending Machine Co. was produced,
at that time they already had manufactured machines that dispensed tickets,
which had no perforations, but which had notches in the side edges of the
ticket strips to receive pairs of lugs spaced on the outer edge of the
dispensing drum, the company decided to try the same method for stamps,
taking regular sheets of the Two Cent Scarlet "Shield" issue and separating
them into vertical strips, then notching them with ordinary scissors at the
edges, genuine pairs of this experimental coil have a couple of tiny pin
hole indentations caused by the dispenser proving they actually went
through the vending machine (as this pair does); it is believed that only a
very few of these stamps were tested in machines, one of which was believed
to have been placed in the Plaza Hotel in New York City; an historically
significant and valuable vending machine forerunner.

of this stamp; one of just a few known on cover; this exceptional
cover realized $1,870.00 (including premium) in our September 1997 Dr.

The desirable and valuable balance of the vending and affixing machine
perforations collection, a wonderful array of over 80 items, primarily
being mint pairs, but we also note some larger mint strips, line pairs,
paste-up pairs, as well as some elusive used singles and pairs, includes
only stamps from the 1902-03 Series that were privately perforated by the
major companies, includes the various types of Brinkerhoff, Mailometer,
Schermack and U.S. Automatic Vending Machine Co. perforations, of note are
the wonderful range of shades found on the 2c "Shield" stamps, all
identified as to their shade and perforation type, while most are items
which catalog between $25.00 and $150.00 each, there is the occasional
higher catalog item included (usually these are with a small fault), nearly
all mint stamps have o.g., ranging from h.r. to n.h., the great majority
are fine-very fine; collections of this size and variety are seldom
encountered today. |

coil, strong color as well, minor pre-affixing corner crease at top right,
cover with central filing spindle hole, very fine; imperforate coils on
