#300, 1c Blue green affixed to cover by Pitney Postal
Machine Co. envelope sealing and stamp affixing device, Arthur H.
Pitney's envelope sealing mechanism was granted Patent No. 735,514 on
August 11, 1903 and the Post Office Department in Washington, D.C. used
this sealer for a time, as did Mandel Bros. and Carson Pirie, Scott & Co.
until 1908; however only one Pitney stamp affixing unit was built for use
with the sealer, this unit was first tested on December 8, 1905 by
Montgomery Ward & Co. of Chicago, a patent filing for this affixing device,
listing Pitney as inventor, was not granted as it was found to interfere
with other applications at the time; this is one of only two covers that
are reported to exist that are identified with this affixing device,
both have uncancelled One Cent 1902 Series stamps and are inscribed in
Arthur Pitney's handwriting "Sealed & Stamped on the new Pitney Postal
Machine, December 8th, 1905"; a fascinating and historical artifact of this
time of great experimentation with the automation of bulk mailings. (Image) |
