319 var. |
#319 var., 2c Carmine, bottom margin imprint and
plate no. 4335 block of twenty, representing the bottom two rows, with
greatly misaligned horizontal perforations due to a foldover, with
some stamps appearing to be imperforate between, o.g., n.h., fine-very
fine; an important showpiece for the 2c Shield specialist, as foldover
errors are rarely seen affecting such a large number of stamps. (Image) |

319c var. |
#319c var., 2c Scarlet, Ty. I, a visually
striking top right corner imprint and plate no. 2367 block of 50, being the
top half of a complete pane, displaying dramatic doubling of all
vertical rows of perforations starting in the top sheet selvage and
extending almost through the fourth row, then the doubling abruptly
ends, the extra rows of vertical perforations are about 2mm apart from the
normal perforations creating, in effect, numerous "gutter" pairs, o.g.,
some hinge reinforcement of perforations as to be expected, the part pane
has completely separated horizontal perforations between the second and
third row, overall very fine; significant perforation errors such as this
are rarely encountered on this issue.

319d |
#319d, 2c Carmine, Ty. I, vertical pair, imperforate
between, block of six containing two strips of three, each being
imperforate horizontally, rich luxuriant color, o.g., bottom two stamps
with small thin spots due to hinge removal, lightly creased horizontally
between the first two rows, very fine. According to Max G. Johl, in
his monumental work "The United States Postage Stamps of the Twentieth
Century", a block of twenty-five, imperforate horizontally, was found at
the Washington, D.C. post office. A few were used for postage, leaving only
this unique block of six, two blocks of four, a strip of three (see next
lot) and a pair. This very rare error is often confused with the more
famous "San Francisco roulette", where imperforate horizontally errors were
found on a small quantity of sheets in a San Francisco post office. These
are easily identified from the error offered here, as the local San
Francisco Postmaster rouletted their error sheets to make them usable as
"normal" postage. One of the great error rarities of the 20th century
and one of the highlights of the Brody collection. Handstamped "HFC" (Henry
F. Colman) and signed lightly in pencil by E. Stern (each highly regarded
early dealer/experts); ex-Worthington.

319d |
#319d, 2c Carmine, Ty. I, vertical pair, imperforate
between, an impressive right sheet-margin vertical strip of three,
imperforate horizontally, with partial arrow guide line marking showing at
top right, brilliantly fresh, full clean o.g., stamps n.h., lightly creased
between first and second stamps, exactly as found on the block of six
offered in the previous lot, in fact this strip unquestionably matches up
perfectly to the block at the right, clearly establishing the positions
where the error occured (the top half portion of a lower right pane of 50),
very fine; one of the premier showpiece errors of the 1902-03
Series; 1950 PF certificate. (Image) |

319e |
#319e, 2c Carmine, Ty. I, vertical pair, imperforate
between, bright color, centered to right as are all of the few known
examples of this rare error, o.g., h.r., fine; according to Mr. Brody's
research, he contends that this error only exists with traces of blind
perforations or, in the case with the pair offered here, with just the
slightest indentation of the perforating machine, between the two stamps,
to his knowledge there exists no example of Scott #319e that is completely
devoid of any trace of perforations or the perforating machine,
additionally these imperforate between errors differ in color and centering
from those which were locally rouletted by the San Francisco Postmaster,
clearly indicating that the non-rouletted errors come from a different
source and location, in fact, Max Johl believes these errors only occured
on one sheet between rows nine and ten, creating only ten known error
pairs; terribly undercataloged, in our opinion, considering how few are
thought to exist. (Image) |

319e |
#319e, 2c Carmine, Ty. I, vertical pair, imperforate
between, the unique bottom sheet-margin partial imprint and plate no.
4475 block of four containing two error pairs, bright color and centered to
right, both distinctive only to the few known genuine examples of this
error which, according to Max Johl, occured between the ninth and tenth row
of a single sheet, o.g., h.r., fine; as with the pair offered in the
previous lot, this block has traces of blind perforations between the two
pairs and, as previously suggested, this is the only way this error
identified as Scott #319e exists, the blind perforations being more
pronounced between the block and the sheet selvage; an important 1902-03
Series error showpiece; ex-Cromwell and Worthington. (Image) |

319e var. |
#319e var., 2c Carmine, Ty. I, vertical pair,
imperforate between, with San Francisco roulettes added, the error pair
being the top pair in a vertical strip of three, wonderfully bright and
fresh, centered just a bit to top as are all of the few known examples of
this error, o.g., h.r., fine; the imperforate between error of this stamp
is extremely rare, but an even more unusual and fascinating variety of this
error is the "San Francisco roulette", as the Postmaster in San Francisco
received a shipment of stamps from Washington in which a few sheets
contained the imperforate between errors, being rather thrifty and
enterprising the Postmaster rouletted the rows where the error occured and
then simply sold them as "normal" postage; one of the finest examples of
this error known to exist; 1988 PF certificate.

#319e var., 2c Carmine, Ty. I, vertical pair,
imperforate between, with San Francisco roulettes added, unused (no
gum) block of four containing two error pairs, bright color, centered
slightly to top as always found, small corner crease at bottom right, some
reinforced separated perfs. between the two error pairs, very fine; an
enormously rare error which is terribly undercataloged in Scott considering
how few error pairs exist; one of just a few known multiples containing
this important error; 1988 PF certificate.

#320c, 2c Carmine rose, Ty. I, imperforate, very
scarce bottom margin imprint and plate no. 3222 block of six, large to very
large margins, bright distinctive color, o.g., lightly hinged, one stamp
with small natural gum inclusion, very fine; plate blocks in the scarce
carmine rose shade are unlisted in Scott, given that the Scott catalog
gives a three times premium for a single in the carmine rose shade over the
normal carmine shade, our estimate is quite conservative as a hinged plate
block in the carmine shade is priced in Scott at $200.00. (Image) |
