#311, 312, 313, $1.00 Black, $2.00 Dark blue and
$5.00 Green, the $1.00 being a horizontal pair, $2.00 with natural s.e.
at right and the $5.00 well centered, used along with two 10c Pale red
brown (#307) and a single 50c Orange (#310), all on an incredible canvas
wrapper sent registered from Hawaii to St. Louis, Mo., purple "Nahiku,
Ter. of Hawaii" straightline handstamp at top with manuscript date
"2/17/04", purple "Registered" handstamp at bottom left, with ms. sender's
notation "From N.E. Lemmon/Nahiku, Hawaii/Bird's Nest Fern" and addressed
to "Mr. David R. Francis, St. Louis, Mo.", black St. Louis receiving
handstamp, the 10c and 50c stamps faulty, however the dollar values are
sound, overall fine. This canvas wrapper enclosed a parcel of tropical
plants, the "Bird's Nest Fern", and was sent to David R. Francis, President
of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition Company. The $9.70 franking
represented a legitimate postage rate from Hawaii of four hundred
eighty-one times (30 lbs., 1 oz.) the 2c per oz. first class letter rate,
plus an 8c registry fee. This spectacular cover is remarkable in many
respects. First, it is one of the few recorded covers bearing a complete
set of the 1902-03 Dollar values and is the only known non-philatelic
usage. Additionally, this February 17, 1904 usage represents the
earliest documented usage of both the Two Dollar and Five Dollar
values. And, finally, the Hawaiian origin for the 1902-03 Dollar values
is believed to be unique to this cover. Certainly a great postal history
rarity and one of the most important 1902-03 Series covers one could hope
to ever obtain. (Image) |
