#319, 2c Carmine, Ty. I, a most unusual picture
post card of San Francisco ("Evening at the Cliff House and Seal Rocks")
franked with a vertical bisect of the Two Cent "Shield" stamp,
accepted as legitimate payment of postage as the San Francisco Post Office
had a severe shortage of One Cent stamps (the proper post card rate)
following the devastating San Francisco earthquake, stamp tied by "San
Francisco, Cal./May 9, 1906" machine cancel (three weeks after the April
18th earthquake and subsequent fires), addressed to Dimond, Cal. and
backstamped upon arrival, with poignant message "Tell Mrs. Rhodes I could
not find her brother", very fine; few such legitimate bisect usages still
survive; also accompanied by five picture post cards of the era showing the
devastation following the earthquake, plus a stampless cover sent from San
Francisco one week after the earthquake to Philadelphia on April 25th
(residents were allowed a brief period to send mail postage free). (Image) |

cover from Tsicheo, China to Harvey, Illinois, cover also franked with pair

the U.S. Two Cent stamp however remained uncancelled, as the sender had
hoped that the Chinese postal system would deliver his letter via the U.S.
Postal Agency in Shanghai, as evidenced by his manuscript instruction below
the stamp, nevertheless the letter was given to the Japanese Imperial
Shanghai post in error, resulting in a 6c postage due penalty (double
deficiency rate) and with a "Due 6 Cts." violet handstamp applied, various
Shanghai and Japanese backstamps, cover with rounded corners at top and a
couple of minor edge tears, a fine and fascinating cover. (Image) |
